Before college, none of my friends smoked and I come back this summer and I'm the only one who doesn't Is it weird to start smoking at 18? It seems awfully late to start.
EDIT- I totally forgot the "I don't smoke option". My bad, pretend like it's totally there.
I didn't start smoking until 19 or 20. I picked up the habit because my girlfriend as the time smoked and I began bumming cigarettes off her. Eventually, I bought my own. Anyway, we broke up later that year but the habit stuck around for many, many years. I finally quit a few years ago and I wish I had done so sooner. If you haven't started yet, don't. If you have, well...you'll figure it out over time.
I've never smoked except for a nice cigar once or twice a year. Too many relatives have had lung cancer. So I just dip instead. I know I'm a hypocrite
Do girls even kiss dippers? Do you have to brush your teeth first? Not being an ass, serious questions.
I started smoking when I was 12. Not all the time, of course, but when I could. By the time I was 18 it was a pack-a-day habit. I quit when I got married and stayed smoke-free for five years, but during the divorce (2002) I started up again and haven't been able to quit since.
I'm seriously going to talk to my doctor about it next time I see him, I've stopped smoking in the house and not smoking while on the PC was one of those things I wasn't sure I could do, but I've been going outside to smoke for the past year.
@Fajita_Jim: My GF didn't know I dipped until we were dating for 6 months. It's been 3 years and as long as I don't do it around her she doesn't say anything. I told her I'd quit if she asked me to. She hasn't yet.

So you just switched from having risks in lung or throat cancer to the various mouth cancer this can cause. I really don't see how it;s any different then smoking but at least you admit your hypocrisy.
I'm sorry, but if you started smoking at 18+ you're stupid. I can understand younger people getting addicted due to wanting to be cool, but at 18+... no.
Started smoking weed several years back. I'm 19 now, close to 20 and I have cut back on smoking weed quite a lot compared to my younger years. I only smoke on special occasions or with friends a couple times a month. I never smoked cigarettes though.
Wow, could you be anymore lame? I don't care if you smoke, but immediately assuming that you should do something because your friends are, and even going so far as to be worried that you've missed the boat is the absolute height of weakness for a human being.
Never started. I just can't stand the smell/taste of smoke, it burns my nose and throat after a short amount of time. But I never speak up when it becomes bothersome.
Really started trying it in college while drinking. Basically I was one of the "social smokers." I picked up pretty fast from "social smoking" to just doing it at school. When I graduated and moved back home, it pretty much flatlined, except on weekends when I'm with friends. I'm happy that I've slowed down almost to no smokes.
Started smoking cigarettes at 17 to help me quit pot. Stopped at 23. Bounced around from 3-4 cigarettes to half a pack to 1 1/2 packs per day. Smoking is my biggest regret by far. I wish I had my sense of smell and taste back. I wish I wasn't paranoid about lung/esophageal cancer/stroke/MI. If you're a young guy who's thinking about starting because your friends/gf smoke or you want to stick it to your parents or whatever, DON'T. Your friends are assholes, the girl is cheating on you, your parents don't really care one way or the other, etc etc.
Well i started in school like 16 17, around there. I used to smoke on and of for 3 years, then i completely stopped (peer pressure sigh)
I occasionally buy a 10 pack and smoke like 1 a week when i go out, or when im freaking stressed about something. I used to be afraid that i may start getting really addicted to them, but thankfully that isn't the case.
Its a nasty habit to be honest, i want to stop it COMPLETELY.
Started smoking around 13, continued smoking on and off till today (now 26) i just put on a nicotine patch for GOOD this time.. kinda have to seeing as i was diagnosed with sarcoidosis (in the lungs) and on top of that having asthma, i was a stupid kid, i did quit for about 3 years then my father passed so i started up again and quit again for about 2 years.
But.. it's time to say goodby to the sweet cancerous death causing volcano sticks, my advice that isn't worth 2 pennies don't start.. it's nothing but bad for you and you gain nothing by smoking, you don't look cool and all it does is make you waste money and fuck your lungs up, that being said i am sure nobody gives a shit and will continue to smoke and it's your right.
Now.. in terms of pot from 13 to about 18-19 i was a young dumb stoner then realized it's a waste of my time and money but i don't look down on stoners or smokers or boozers, it's your life, i actually find stoners to be quite enjoyable to be around, pretty deep conversations me and some of my stoner friends (and no im not being sarcastic, we generally have deep conversations which i find nice)
I started around 16 or 17, was broke and moving on to college then so I kinda of stopped except for the occasional bummed smoke. I then smoked until I was about 27, quit for about a year and have been off and on since. I do not smoke in my car, or at work, so that really cuts it out a lot, but I smoke like a fiend when/if I drink and I can not stand sitting in front of the computer without a pack nearby.
I smoke cigars a few times a year but I've never touched cigarettes. My mother smokes them to this day and I've seen what they can do to you once you've been hooked. I'm pretty weak-willed as it is, if I were to start smoking now I know I'd turn into one of those pack-a-day users.
I've never smoked and never hope too. Seriously, it's probably a thing you just don't wanna get into, especially if you're just thinking of doing it because your friends are.
The poll seems to be missing a very important option.
Yeah, it would have been nice for the non-smokers to see the poll results without voting. Oh well.
I started around 15 years of age, but rarely. When I joined the Navy at 18, I started smoking a lot more. Still puffing away and I dip tobacco too. Oh my.

I started right before college (after high school) too. Although I had actually only just turned 17. But I should have been 18. At first it was just a way to get a break when I was a busser at a restaurant. Then it got to be the stress reliever.
