Hey guys, we're growing!  And we need some help.  We're looking to hire a badass engineer that has experience working on at least one large web site.  Here's a list of specific criteria we're interested in.  If this sounds like you or someone you know, send me a PM and we'll talk.  Thanks!

  • A Python guru.  You should be able to write Python code in your sleep.  If you've worked with Django, even better.
  • Experience with databases, ideally PostgreSQL, but other databases are fine too.  You should be comfortable tuning queries.  If you can look at usage statistics and recommend a value for effective_cache_size and shared_buffers, awesome.
  • At least intermediate understanding of Linux, specifically when it comes to web hosting.  Experience setting up, tuning, and serving web content with at least one web server (Apache, NginX, etc.)
  • You should be able to tell me why your editor is superior to mine.  Bonus points if we use the same editor and you're still able to convince me.
  • Be genuinely excited about new technology, and how it might apply to our problem set.

I love playing as an Engineer! It gives me a chance to sit back and watch some sentries decimate Scouts.

This should be a requirement for any job where you'll be coding, really.

I'm may regret asking this, but what is a mop wrangler? Looking up "Wrangle" in the dictionary doesn't yield any results for things I would expect to be done to mops.

@MattyFTM:  Just a generic local term for a janitor...  but I'd be a devilishly charming, oh-so-heart-breakingly handsome janitor!  I'd totally win over the female demographic Giant Bomb so desperately craves.  And if there's anything bigger than my ego, I want it caught and shot!

EDIT:  Maybe I should write up a spoof of Stephen King's Dark Tower called The Mop-Slinger.  Hmm.

Are you sure you guys don't want to hire an underqualified full-time student from the other side of the country? I'm only really good with Java and have limited experience with mySQL, and no experience with web design.

That's what you're looking for, right?

Sadly, I'm a Ruby/Rails guy rather than Python/Django or I'd ask about employment starting next year.  Maybe I should learn them in the meantime!

I'm a computer engineer, and have programmed in Python for the last 9 years... yet I fail (for the most part) at all the other listed requirements. ^_^; Oh, well. Guess I'll "keep on keepin' on" at getting better.

Anyway, nice to see Whiskey Media growing. ^_^

Man. I was in software engineering for 2 semesters, then I changed. Should've stayed in it! I know Java and C++ very well, a little HTML, and I'm started to mess with PHP and Ruby a little, but never even touched Python. But I'm willing to learn!

Oh, but I am using an Apache server right now on my site. It's cPanel though, and you're using Dreamhost's own control panel. I tried out Dreamhost's demo panel for a few hours when I was looking for a server to use for my site. I almost signed up for their shared servers. Then I tried out HostGator's. I had to use HostGator's because I've used cPanel before when I built my uncle's site a couple years ago.

As far as editors go: my site is new, so I have a temporary Joomla homepage, but I'm working on a new home page with a great editor. It's great, it has WYSIWYG, FTP, supports HTML JAVA CSS and PHP. I can control MYSQL from it, view tables, and make adjustments. You can trace errors easily. It links directly to the database so any changes I make after I put the page up will be instantly seen. I can view the page before I put it on the server. It has shared editing so other people can edit it, and the changes will show up on my program.
It's Dreamweaver.
The only databases I've used are MYSQL which is pretty simple to view and maintain with phpMyAdmin.

Guaranteed I'll never have qualifications for a job at GB. HTML,XML, VBA, SQL, Javascript, Python, and an advanced understanding of Excel is about all I could offer on the technical side. But hey, if ever there was a need for creating mathmatical models to forecast future numbers, or explain trend variances, or even how to predict future periodic events using auto-regression and/or random walks, I'd be your guy... something tells me I'm stuck with large companies though...which is somewhat disappointing. Building something from the ground up, like GB is exciting. Oh well. :/

Ah man you guys need to put up a better description on the title.  I'm just a nuclear engineer.  Got my degree from one of those schools thats always in the movies.  If you ever need a backup power source, let me know.  I did learn how to code in C++ so how about you give me a couple of weeks and I can learn what you need out of me.

You know, I think its great the dev team is expanding but it just doesnt make sense to me.

giantbomb's business model doesnt make sense at all. How can a website go for nearly a full year now with one publicity? How can you still operate with no apparent sources of revenues? I just don't get it. Somebody explain that to me.
