Just because you take it as a compliment doesn't mean it wasn't an insult. It's about the intent in it's delivery.

Geek and nerd equate to the same meaning to me, which doesn't bother me either.

They aren't insults. It's like going up to a jock and calling him a jock.

because nerds and geeks now rule the world? Everything is based on technology developed by dudes and ladies in their basements or labs.

If someone is calling you a geek, chances are they're not complimenting you, but using the term in a derogatory way. The fact you somehow overshot that fact and instead tried to find a fallacy in their insult speaks volumes.

Geek, nerd and dork are all different to me.  Nerd would be a compliment since it implies intelligence, dork would be an insult since I associate it with social inadequacy, and geek is what I describe myself as, so that would be apropos.  However, it also depends on the intent and inflection of the speaker.  Any word then becomes a potential insult if the purpose to malign someone is there.

- You're a fucking great nerd

I don't think any of them are insults. It's all in how you take it really, whether it was intended as insult or not. I laugh everytime I see someone who is ashamed for what they like or are into. I love Power Rangers and I have no shame in saying it. Neither with Gilmore Girls. You don't like it or like me for liking it, well that's your problem not mine. You're missing out as far as I'm concerned.

Considering all the Gilmore Girl converts I've made (I'd count it at about 7, men and women) I'd say I was right in that regard. :P

Well generally no one would want to be called a geek as it puts them on a different level to everyone else, being labeled something automatically sets you apart from other people. Of course it depends on the context used, if someone doesn't like you and they call you something its usually an insult (stating the obvious). But your friends could call you a geek as a joke or a compliment. Geek wouldn't be an insult if its meaning wasn't attached to something unpleasent and less superior by the general masses.

Kind of depends on how it's said to me and who by. I don't often take anything as an insult though, well except the insulting.

If it's meant as an insult, then it is.  One can insult someone by calling him/her a "very cheerful person" if the situation is right.
It's all about intent, not really about semantics. Unless you use semantics to avoid confrontation or to warp your on self image into a more "acceptable" one ( in this case, a possible superiority complex).

It might  not shock you to hear that some people fool themselves into feeling superior by thinking that books and science are a waste of time. When looking at all the different groups of people from a sociological perspective, it's all very similar.

People who label themselves as geeks or nerds or whatever really annoy me. If someone called me a geek I would just say, "Okay." I don't say thanks or any stupid shit like that, and I don't get mad or anything. I have never called anyone a nerd since grade 3, and I've never been called a dork or geek or whatever. For whatever reason, these words just piss me off. Kind of like "gamer".

I have embraced my nerdiness. Why? Because it's hard to not notice it when you play WoW, read comic books, and play Magic the Gathering.

Geeks and nerds or whatever are generally avoided and disliked by by ignorent people before they even get to know them.  I can almost understand this considering the "Geeks/nerds/dorks"  in my grade dont take care of themselves they are fat, they bad hygiene and horrible social skills.  Im geeky but i take care of myself and have decent social skills so people like me.
