I suppose they are trying to attract a bigger crowd of (Those Young'uns)

But i dont see why replacing a couple of vowels changes anything, its a good channel, but i think getting rid of those stupid "Original' movies and Ghost shows would be the best approach. (Anyone remember Ice Spiders? A riveting, new age classic, believe me)

What do you guys think of the new image they are trying to make for themselves?

I don't know, but the subject was covered with much hilarity in an episode of The Geekbox a few weeks ago.

They had a problem holding a trademark for such a generic term.

I saw Blood Rayne 3 on Sci Fi a few months ago.... "Alsnuts2? Blood Rayne 3?" Thats right kiddies Cowboy mother-fucking Vampires.

If they want people to watch the channel they need to rerun MST3k!!

I guess it's just to make it kewl with the kids, while maintaining the same name when said verbally. Y'know, because the Sy-FY channel is such great water cooler fodder.

It seems a completely pointless change to me. Those who were into their programming probably still will be despite the change, and those who weren't will either continue to not care, or will get sucked in by the name only to realise that the shows aren't for them. I'd guess that those who want to watch this kind of stuff already know about Sci-Fi.

The other option is that it's trying to draw in the hyphy crowd.

That is the worst and most awful idea anyone has had, ever.  Sci Fi Originals are the greatest unintentional comedies ever made.  Well, I guess I can't say they're unintentional.  I think they are well aware of how incredibly hammy those films are now, and I'm almost positive they're aiming for it.

As for the ghost shows... I just plain enjoy those.

For the same reason Cartoon Network is now "CN Real" and why Pizza Hut is now "The Hut."

Dude Sci-Fi channel original movies are THE BEST.

Not in the traditional sense of the word, but more in the so-bad-they're-good way. I mean come on, what's not to like about SUPERGATOR?

Something with trademarking problems, and an attempt to rebrand the whole channel. I believe the trademarking issue was due to "sci-fi" generally applying to science fiction solely, and the Sci-Fi channel had non-science fiction programs.

There are plenty of channels on TV that show movies that are actually, legitimately good. Sci-Fi or SyFy is for nerds and the unemployable.

Faaarscaaaape. Which, incidentally, they are some what trying to revive. They could call it The Horseshit Channel for all I care if they give me more Farscape. Also they show Dr. Who, but they can't take any credit for that.

Who cares? I never watch it anyway.  Anything classic on that channel was cut, edited and sanitized. I watched Galactica on DVD, 'cause I couldn't stand all the commercials. I gave up on the Sci Fi channel when they didn't do a successor to Babylon 5. Most of the original stuff they do , is the sort of crap that was once shown at drive-ins.

Man I miss when Sci Fi wore its nerdiness like a badge of honor. Now corporate interests are trying to turn it into a catch all entertainment network with a bias towards low budget horror films. It just breaks my heart to see a channel I practically grew up with turn into a shadow of its former self. Back in 1992 I used to watch the Venus cgi screensaver that the network used as a placeholder image before the channel actually launched. And when it premiered I watched the hell out of all the stupid and low budget tv shows they had picked up like My Secret Identity and Nightmare Cafe...

Come to think of it...Sci Fi has kinda always had terrible programming. The occasional home run aside, (BSG!) the channel never had very much good on. So I guess good on SyFy for trying a different direction. It may not work but at least they broadened themselves up a bit to allow different and possibly interesting new projects. At least until that fails and we get another Spike copy cat.

Sci-Fi needs to go back and embrace its nerdy roots, because half-assing your way to the middle pisses everyone off.

Sci Fi has been going downhill ever since they put wrestling on their network but there is quite a few gems on SyFy, piled under tons of crap. Name change was for trademark issues and (probably) to rejuvenate their brand (ala TNN->Spike TV).

I refuse to call it Sy-Fy it's utterly utterly ridiculous, I simply will not. It's Sci-Fi. Science. Fiction. End of discussion.

The change got people talking about that channel again, so their move worked.  If you pronounce that in certain other language's versions of those letters, it just sound stupid, though.

Norwegian it's like "sew, bleah".  Fy is something usually followed by a swear word :)

Sci-Fi is now Sy-Fy because the term "sci-fi" denigrates the genre. HA!

It's a rebranding because they want to branch out from just science fiction, even though their programming has been more than science fiction for years now.  This way they can say to all the people who are turned off by the potential nerdiness of Sci Fi, "Come look at us now, we are not just science fiction...see, we are Sy-Fy which is different than Sci-Fi."

I can't believe people get paid to come up with this shit in Hollywood.

Boa VS Python, Lake Placid 2, Puppet Master VS Demonic Toys, I could go on, but you obviously haven't seen these achievements in film making.
