Why is this on Giant Bomb?

So, I was about to watch the new ask me anything when i noticed this.

Fuck me, I finish and go to watch the AMA and this is on the front page

I have never gotten anything like that before.  Shit, I hope I didn't jinxed myself.

Looks like some sort of web banner advertisement.

I haven't seen any of those, although I am seeing a bunch of new ads. 
 
EDIT: Ok, now I'm seeing them. None that bad, but I did see a casino prize one, and an ad for free online Pacman. They're ugly, but until we get eye blasters and viagra ads, I won't complain.

Yeah, it's a shame to see such shady advertising here. WM really needs to do some quality control on their banner ads.

You should subscribe man, this website is well worth $50 a year.

I literally check this site all day every day, and I don't like ads in my awesome.

Someone will stop in to parrot the mission statement soon and someone else will insist "fuck people who don't subscribe". 
Both very compelling, I can tell you. And Sweep, before you post your smug final word and lock this, consider what he's actually suggesting. That a site have ads actually relevant to the interests of the people subscribing. Instead of just agreeing to everything that gives you an offer. Nobody likes a slut. And keying into your demo benefits everyone; they get more clicks, you get more revenue, the users get ads that aren't tantamount to the bullshit I filter my emails of daily. Its just food for thought, really.

I logged out to see some some ads. They don't seem that bad.

You don't see threads anymore about "How does Giant Bomb make money?".

Seems out of place to me. And completely out of character for Whiskey which just sounds fishy. Maybe the firm they use for ads just decided to host this kind of junk without warning.

Remove these ads, double up the subscription price, see subscriptions increase TENFOLD. WORLD TOUR JUSTIFIED.

Yeah even before the subscriber thing started I only saw the ODST ad. That's it. I am Canadian if that has any bearing on it.

You guys know the rules: Don't subscribe; ads. Subscribe; Don't ads. Simple really. That said they Facebook kind of patronizing, but it's not the end of the world, so whatever.

Just let them know the Ads seem perverse. They get ads thru agencies I presume (like google ads only i think they use better stuff), and I would presume sometimes stuff like that slips in. I don't think they did it to make you mad.

And ya, that particular domain (the one behind that site you researched) has been around for years. I don't know how they stay in business, honestly, as they are very clear that you don't get anything without spending anything but I guess some people are still suckers even when they are told.

That being said, I'm not sure who you would email about that. Maybe Dave? I really don't know, just throwing a name out there.

Yeah, not liking the fake hot-chick on facebook wants to be your friend ads.  As well as the other shady ads.  I don't mind ads at all, but these are the kind of ads I NEVER see unless I go to a shady site.

I like the fact you believed it was legit. That's pretty funny that people still fall for adverts on the internet. Does the shoot the duck to win a prize one tempt you as well? That's a bit of a scam too.

For all the "prizes" these ads offer... why don't any of them offer alcohol???

I'm not seeing them. I'm not sure if they're regional at all seeing as I'm in the UK though. But this whole thing just looks BAD. They could at least have relevant ads, preferably ones that aren't spyware or rouge software packages. Unless of course this is some kind of joke because I really haven't seen any.

Mike recently said on the WM blog that the content of the ads were no longer in their control. He said they would be testing it to see how it goes but I don't know how long that's supposed to last.

Ahaha, you seriously thought a "click here  to win FABULOUS prizes!" ad was real and then got angry about it. Here's a tip: alt-f4 disables ads.   They've already talked about the problems niche websites have getting targeted ads, since most companies consider their audiences more well-informed and less likely to be influenced by ads (except, apparently, people who complain about ads). So, if Giant Bomb has a hard time getting the Utilikilt ads you crave so much, and you're unwiling to fund them through a subscription, how else are they going to make money besides through the broad, general ads that are on EVERY other website?

Remember when everyone believed them when they said they would never do stuff like this on the site? Oh those were the days of innocence and youth! 
 
Anyway, I have never seen an ad on here, with the exception or that horrendously terrible comedy show they did a while back, so I guess I don't really feel strongly about this one way or the other as it has yet to affect me. Though knowing that some day they could plaster the place with ad's like game trailers  is not a welcoming thought. Not sure if it's my adblocker or if it's not being the US that's doing it. 
 
As long as they don't start with those annoying fucking ads where you have to watch some 30 second ad for a stupid car or KFC before every video then I'm fine with the ad's as I will just ignore them. Should the day come though that I have to watch a 30 second ad before every video then I will just be going else where.

Whatever they are just ads, you can live with them but the weird part is when they talked about how the ads would be relevant to our interest, guess that didn't work out.
