  • No need for expensive equipment
  • Reflected light means less eye strain
  • Unchangeable yet perfect difficulty setting
  • Much less expensive
  • Infinitely good graphics (cannot be quantified)
  • Food can be eaten while reading
  • Exceedingly portable and highly appropriate in a public setting
  • Less social stigma
  • Much better story and dialogue
  • No tacked-on multiplayer
  • Much wider variety of subject material

You may have well just titled your post "Why apples will always be better than oranges". Although, I'm having trouble deciding just how serious you are. This is the internet, after all.

OK, but video games are actually interactive. Don't get me wrong, I love a good book, but they're two entirely different mediums that serve different purposes to me. Books generally tell stories better, but video games are, well, games! They're simply more fun to play than a book is to read.

That's essentially what it amounts to. I'd say that video games are better than books, simply because they have so many other tools that books can't replicate. You have audio, visual, interaction, and a bunch of other things that books don't have.

I agree. But this is definitely going to get locked.

If you have an opinion that's against video games, it is best to keep it to yourself, because the mods are hell-bent on closing any threads that degrade video games in any way possible.

The only thing is that I don't derive nearly as much enjoyment from reading novels. I've always preferred that information be presented visually or tangibly, something that video games both bring to the table.
In the end, it's all comes down to individual novels and individual video games, anyway. Broad generalizations of entire mediums are crazy.

Why video games will always be better than books:

  • You can shoot dudes in the face.
  • You can stab dudes in the face.
  • You can punch dudes in the face.
  • You can kick dudes in the face.
  • You can do all of the above in slow motion.

I think we're done here.

From a narrative perspective, you could have just kept it at:

  •  videogames are terrible

I don't know where you're coming from... the mods here are generally cool people (except for ZombiePie, that douchebag stopped featuring cool stuff I did), and I've never seen anything to show that they are "hell-bent on closing threads that degrade video games."

Dara O'Briain makes a good point regarding videogames versus books - videogaming is the only media which denies you content if you aren't good enough. Clip follows!

I know you're just making joke here, so I'm jokingly responding.

#1 Not if you're reading from a computer!!
#2 They are working on LED color screens (non color already exist, kindle) that rely on reflective light. (again point is nul if reading from a  computer or a nook)
#3 Different books require different skill levels to read. Game difficulty is there for a good reason, its an asset.
#4 Really the same point as #1, but ok yeah the average video game costs more than the average book, true.
#5 Food can also be eaten while playing many games. And I question how well you're really able to read while stuffing your face.
#6 Hello PSP, Hello DS, Hello iPhone and Android!
#7 Who the hell gives a crap about social stigma?!? (sounds like you just pretend to read to impress "Tha Laydees"
#8 Arguable, but yeah, fair enough.
#9 Yeah, um, zero multiplayer. How is that a good thing? People like multiplayer, A LOT.
#10 Yeah, well books have been around for what, thousands of years? Of course there's more material there.

Yup, missing a lot, (but you know that)...
But you seem to imply that "imagining" something is better than seeing it. If this were the case, there would be no artwork of any kind, as it would better for people just to have the art piece described than to see it themselves. On top of that is the concept of interactivity and choice. Games you can make choices, basically rarely are two video games experience identical, yet with a book, every time you read it its EXACTLY the same. (unless you're reading a choose your own adventure) Additionally, with a book your are completely dependent on the narrator, where as in more interactive experiences, the environment can be shown to you, and you can explore it at will, instead of just relying on a description conceived by someone else with their own set of biases and focus.

books, and movies too, will continue to trump the vast majority of video games as a form of narrative for a long time. hopefully someday we'll see video games that are able to tell us great interactive dramatic stories that do not borrow from other mediums (*ahem* cutscenes).

It's hard for me to find a good novel these days, expectations have been set too high after hundreds of years of writings. Games though, I can handle most of them.

I should probably point out that there is a difference between criticising a videogame and deliberately attempting to provoking a negative reaction through excessive bitching, much like there is a difference between novels and videogames. The two are completely inconsistent, and are treated as such.

They're both forms of entertainment that have the capacity to tell fantastic stories with rich worlds, and are often compared by the media/old people.

That's like saying you can't compare a boat and a car because they travel on different surfaces.

Eating while reading? You can't do that with games? Hell, i'm more likely to do it while gaming than reading, you kinda need your hands to flip pages and hold the book ya know? And try not to get all your food over the pages.

I'm being deliberately unhelpful here. I fully appreciate that they aren't completely dissimilar (despite using that exact word), but as genres they both occupy completely different spectrums. In reply to @Three0neFive: You can compare a boat and a car, sure - but in similarly vague terms.

Besides, what we really need is a carboat.

I'm not a book lover. I read about one book a year. I think school put me off it.

I much prefer playing music. Unlike novels, and like video games, it takes skill to play music well. I find no sense of accomplishment in reading a book, but playing an amazing song well is a very special feeling. It's not even that expensive, my acoustic guitar cost me £60. OK something like a piano is way more but still, the point remains.

Reading other bullet points... no light is required, there are many difficulty levels of music, once you have an instrument you can play music that is shared, for free. No graphics are needed to make music beautiful. Unfortunately, food is not supported. Portability depends on what you are playing, pull out an ocarina and you are set. story and dialogue are optional. Multiplayer is not tacked on but I never bother with it. There are no limits to the subject material.

And when you aren't playing music, you can be listening to it because technology.

we need a video game where you need to read as many books as you can about the relationship between cars and boats in a set time.

Or a book telling the story of a boy who loved to play video games that had you investigate cars and boats for similarities.

or a car which is made out of boats and video games but is in the shape of a book....
