Hey everyone,

I recently decided to do some data visualisation and the Giant Bomb wiki seemed to be a great source of data.

I threw together this simple page for viewing the relationships between the people who make games.

No Caption Provided

You can visit the site at giantdata.dino.io.

Some things to note:

  • You can double click on a person to add their data to the graph
  • Things get real dicey when the graph gets too big
  • The uptime of the page may also be hit or miss but every thing you need to run this can be found on GitHub.

Wow, this is a really awesome tool! It's so interesting to see the connections and careers people in the industry have had.

Yeah, it really didn't like it when I put in Troy Baker.

@dr_kyosho: This is pretty crazy/awesome. I'm not sure it totally works the way intended, but I've put a promo on the front page to get some more eyes on it. Nice job.

This is very cool. Search any big name in video games and you see how much of an impact they have had.

John Drake's name spawned a mini galaxy.

It looks cool, I'm not sure how I would use it.

This is neat, but the performance is rough!

Our minds both instantly went to the same place.

Neat tool!

I'm glad you guys like it :), I may re-write it and spend some time improving the performance. I might also extend it a little so it includes more of the wiki data.

If you want to experience a true nightmare, there is only one option: Dave Lang.

Seriously though, this is a really cool tool. Data visualization is so fun for looking at people's impact, especially with something like games.

This thing's cool, nice job. I'm using d3.js a lot right now for work -- it can be pretty neat. Just taking a quick glance, I'm not sure why it appears to slow down with a bunch of nodes -- d3 can usually handle thousands. It may be from calling refreshGraph() too often -- maybe try debouncing that function, or wait until you've got all the entries ready?

@catsakimbo: Yeah, I wasn't really thinking about performance whilst making it :P, I only had a couple of days to get something together so It's kinda hacked at the moment.

Very interesting! Primarily a proof of concept right now but still really cool. I have absolutely no expertise on how much work it would take to polish something like this a little but I think I could spend a lot of time with a slightly more usable version. It's great to see the potential for accessing wiki data in different ways.

@psychopenguin: Can confirm. Typed in Nolan North and Chrome asked me if I wanted to kill the page.

Rough though it may be, this is an awesome way to make use of wiki data. This is some really cool stuff, duder.
