Well the topic says it all. However I probably should bring into light why I bring this up...

Today in English class I woke up (yes I was asleep through almost the whole class) to hear a very passionate debate between some Arab kid and some band kid about what has happened in the school system with our Christmas break.
Now that actually got me thinking about it... over the past five years I myself have gone from having 3 weeks off for Christmas vacation, to 1 week off for Christmas vacation and for some odd reason... my Christmas vacation actually starts on Christmas Eve. Now I would go into detail about the two kids debating but.... eh it's beside the point right now and it's pretty obvious.

What do you guys think?  I'm willing to bet it's just me but I was wondering if anyone else has noticed it.

I'm not sure how the eventual death of Satan Claus will affect Christmas.

At the rate of political correctness increase, I'm surprised Christmas break even exists now. It even became renamed "Winter break" years ago.

Maybe.  World's ending in 2012 so I'm inclined to say no.

As long as there are huge multinational corporations that want to sell shit, there will be a big day for you to build up to by buying said shit. Whether or not it's called christmas, who cares. christmas is as much about "december holiday" as it is about celebrating the birth of history's greatest liar (who, by the way, wasn't even born on the 25th, instead the date was chosen to coincide with the romans celebration of winter solstice.)

Quite ironic if you consider that the reason why schools started having a long break in the middle of winter was because of Christmas.

In Aussieland this has never really been a concern. We have always had 2 weeks off in April, 2 weeks off in July, 2 weeks off in October and then we have from about the 20th of December to the 1st of February for Christmas break.

But you should see the holidays for University and TAFE. Time coming out of our arses.

Winter Break is much longer once you get into College.  Around here we get anywhere from 3 to 5 weeks off, that is the colleges, I think the high schools get about 2 and half.  It'd be silly to have people in school then, teachers would be planning vacations, students would be sick and also on trips, snow days would occur frequently(at least here) and not a whole lot of real work would get done.  It also gives everybody a nice break between semesters.  I don't think it will ever go away, it will just become less about Christmas and more about just giving everybody a break, which is totally fine with me.

@baconbits33: Okay. Ethnicity is not the same as religious affiliation though. Even if what you meant is that most are Muslim, I was under the impression that Muslims have no problem with Christmas. On the other hand, if most of a school's student body does not celebrate a certain holiday, then I see no problem with only having a very short break or even no break at all for that holiday.

I was wondering about this as well. Mine were pretty much the same before I graduated. Roughly starts on the 15-20th until the end on the 3rd-5th. Still called Christmas Break as well.

I pay taxes!  No reason why they can't be kept there all year around.  Either there or the prisons, I say.

If you think that, you don't get it. I'm not religious, but I don't think Christmas is just about the presents. It's about celebrating and being with friends and family.

yes, i think so. i think they call it winter break now. i would be mad if we didn't get a winter break. it seems like now it is just more about buying things then being with people.   i just have to say that my winter break is from dec 18- jan 22 :) it is pretty long winter break.

This.  But Winter Break will be there until the eventual massive overhaul of the education system.  I get less than 2 weeks now, but it's still almost two weeks that I don't have to think about limit cycles or s-functions or fractals or goddamn PDEs.

I don't care, as I'm done with school. And if the kids are more in school, and less home I'm fine with that :P
