I was playing Empire Total war today, and it got me wondering. If you alone could re-write your countries constitution, how would change your countries system of government?
I have joint British-US citizenship so I'll answer for both.
I would make the US a parliamentary republic, with a President as figurehead and a Prime Minster and cabinet all from the legislator running the country. The new House of Representatives would have a term of 4 years, but the Prime Minster could ask the President to dissolve Parliament at any time. So basically the British system. But each state would have 4 senators that are elected by a proportional voting system. So there would be more than 2 parties in the Senate.
In the UK I would get rid of the devolved parliaments/assemblies. Make a proportional senate to replace the House of Lords, but keep a first past the post House of Commons and give war making powers to Parliament.
I'd abolish the monarchy and reinstate the old Republic of the United Netherlands! Also it would not be headed by a president but by a Stadhouder!!!!!! Back to the glory days ^^
I know, we need to go back to the days of the Cretien/Martin government. I miss hearing about the weekly scandals and wasted money. I also hate having our dollar worth so much. It really sucks buying games on steam and paying less than the price it lists there. I much enjoyed when I payed 10% more.
Besides, I also gained a lot of respect for the opposition when they tried to illegally take control of the government. I definitely want a government that's willing to say "your vote doesn't matter, at all".
That said, this:
@FreakAche said:
" I would change my government so that the distribution of seats in Parliament actually represented the votes on a 1:1 ratio. "
Though the royal family is utterly pointless in my country (Norway), the government is doing well, and I wouldn't risk changing it just for the sake of changing it.

Same thing with the British monarchy. I personally like the Queen and the monarchy.
Though Britain needs a democratically elected second chamber, not one thats appointed or allocated by birth as it is now

This (Sweden). Besides, a king is much more fancier than a president.
/sarcasm Ohh come on man, he's playing with a kitten for Christ sake! He can't be that evil! /endsarcasm
Seriously though, I just want a government that gives a shit about making the country better and the people happy, and not spend all there god dam time worrying about how they are going to stay in power once they get it. When did this become something to hope for and not common fucking sense? I think the world is ready for a good old fashion Tabula Rasa on most of the worlds governments.

Yes; Britain is to be a republic once again, there was a dream that was London, and it shall be realised. These are the wishes of Marcus Aurelius, etc etc.
I'd end term limits in the executive and add them in the legislative. Because if we get a decent president we should be able to keep him, meanwhile congress's impotence directly correlates to the fact that they're practically always in election mode. So use them once and throw them out. If they're worth a damn they'll do more good in the executive anyway.
