I've always found reading and hearing foreign languages interesting, like looking at the craziness above, but then I just think "I wish I could understand that" without needing a translator or anything.

I would happily learn an international language for the sake of international communication and understanding etc. but only if other languages were preserved, spoken and taught as well. So much of a culture is bound to its language that I don't think the loss of that could justify the benefits of a single language.

No, because it would ruin a lot of my favourite music. I love listening to music in different languages because they all have their own flair, and if they were all just english it would be boring.

@FluxWaveZ: Me too. It's also fascinating to see how some words seem almost the same, like interesting and intéressant, enabling you to roughly understand sentences in different languages. Or not really, but I would love to know how to speak français.

There are more positive things than negative things with havin alot of languages. First of all, languages serve great importance to culture.

Second of all, accents are awesome. Third, like VideoGameKing said, languages have different purposes. Like speaking Russian makes me feel like Reznov, and while speaking Japanese makes me feel like a video game designer.

There are some negative things like: 1. If everyone spoke one language, you would understand Shigeru Miyamoto. 2. It would be much easier making friends, and everyone would be less shy when talking to foreign people.

As I've learned from using Duolingo to learn German, learning a new language gives a really good natural high, since the brain rewards you for getting things right. Don't take my fix from me.

Thanks for that name drop, started the french one! Seems cool!

No. Language is an important part of culture, which would be eroded if languages devolved into one. At least that's just my opinion.

Twas a joke. You know The Tower of Babel was supposed to cause the separation of people groups based on languages in religions such as Christianity right?

Fuck culture. It would be better for the world if we all spoke one language. There would be much less prejudice amongst different people. We would be less likely to consciously or subconsciously view others as "less human" or completely different then us if we all spoke the same language.

If it means axing every other language, no. As unlikely as it is that I'll ever have to rely heavily on my Swedish or Russian, I enjoy learning new languages and everything that comes with it. It's the best gateway to a culture.

Do you not realize that if we all spoke one language you wouldn't need a gateway because there would be no gate? Other cultures would be more accessible to you and others causing more tolerance and understanding amongst cultures as a whole.

Of course; it's even talked about earlier on in this thread. I didn't think you were joking.

If you a comment from me, you can assume it's joking, sarcastic, or mean. It's typically one of those three.

I believe a universal language would be extremely beneficial to the state of the world over. I think with the rapid expansion of information/communication technology will make this an inevitability anyway. I also believe the strife caused by lingual/cultural barriers much outweigh their value. This could get us one step closer to everybody realizing that we're all in this together.

No, but I would prefer it if we had the capacity to learn all languages... or most of them. Language barriers can really suck sometimes.

No, I love languages, both learning and using them. I'm going to start going to night classes again, continue learning Italian and maybe take a shot at German.

All for different languages though it'd be nice to have a universal translator device in your hands to know what people are saying or learn more about another language.
