So far, it's a bit of a toss-up. There were a couple of really good early toss-ups, but I've found that there are only three CDs I keep playing on a regular basis:
Chevelle - Sci-Fi Crimes: really feels like it should be in the '90s, great to hear someone not using pitch correction on their vocals, and the music feels raw in comparison to some of their previous stuff. It's not This Type of Thinking..., but it's definitely better than Vena Sera or Wonder What's Next.
Every Time I Die - New Junkie Aesthetic: absolutely kick-ass album with kick-ass songs, Buckley sings a bit more on this album and his singing voice is awesome
Maylene and the Sons of Disaster - III: Southern rock at its goddamn finest!
Horse The Band - Desperate Living: love my Nintendo-core, and Horse the Band never disappoints with their albums; raw, pure, and amazing
Do Make Say Think's "Other Truths" is probably my favorite album of the year, but Caspian's "Tertia" is pretty solid as well. Phoenix's "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" is up there on my list, but that list--the list of albums made this year I've even heard--is small, small list.
I thought that was the least interesting Mastodon album with only the first two songs keeping me focused. But enjoy what you love as it's fine with me.
Never would I thought a videogame soundtrack could be my favourite album of the year, but Module somehow did it with Shatter. If you haven't heard it, you owe it to yourself to check it out or better yet, buy the game.
Demon's Souls' soundtrack has won me over completely. Mars Volta's Octahedron was the only album I purchased that came out this year. Though when album of the decade is around, I'll be around to grant Mr.Bungle's California the winner.
@Zajtalan: Rammstien (probably spelled the name wrong) definitely had a great album. The serious songs (Rammlied) worked well with the funny songs (Pussy).
@ThomasP: Good choice, Joel Plaskett has a really fresh sound, his new album is a great improvement on Ashtray Rock.
