Probably because the mainstream forced us to seek out relatively unknown artists. In the old days, it was enough to drop a name (say, Nirvana) and you just had to get the hot new record. Today, it's the other way around: You hear something you like (online radio for instance) and then you look who it's from and go on from there. The problem is that the mainstream labels still think that they can grow stars in a petri dish, even though they constantly fail and all they give us are derivative one-hit wonders. They are also completely oblivious to the fact that live concerts are where the real money is these days. Selling records just doesn't pay anymore (the artists, that is. The labels are as rich as ever).

Yeah.. i do that a lot too..  But i've still not heard of many of these bands, probably because i don't live in the US or in Europe, so the radios here don't play their songs very often

I have only listened to two albums from 2009 this year...
Cosmic Egg - Wolfmother
Humbug - Arctic Monkeys

I was kinda disappointed with Cosmic Egg. Not as badass as before.
Humbug is growing on me. So I guess it has to be Humbug.

@jonnyboy:

Agreed. I saw them play at ABC Glasgow a few months ago. I'm guessing they did it for the whole tour, but they played the album in order. It was fucking incredible.

After that I'd say Alice In Chains new album is pretty spot on.

Edit:

@Meltac: if you like The Black Keys and Hip Hop, yes, you should. the Mos Def songs alone are worth the price of admission.

This was a pretty weak year for music IMO. All but one of my favorite black metal bands disappointed me by releasing what I consider to be some of their worst work. I guess my favorite would have to be one of these 3:

Justin Beiber of course. He is the greatest musical genius the world has ever seen. He's not even the best album of 09, he made the best album of the millenium

Nope! Haha, came out April 7th 2009. 3 days before my birthday : )

Ah yeah Eminems album was pretty sweet too man, but i wasn't feeling it as much as the Eminem show in 2002 ; )
But needless to say, it was a quite impressive come-back after all those years! Looking forward to Relapse 2 in 2010.

Yeah considering everything he's been through and he is getting old , nothing wrong with the album. Just more of the same.

Other than this album and maybe 1 or 2 others there wasn't much to offer this year for the bands I listen to.

People have been loving it (especially Chris Dick). Not the best thing from them I believe but it's solid.

This is the hands down winner this year and I'm surprised- no appalled - that no one has mentioned it yet. No more music is ever needed going forward as audiophonic perfection has been achieved (over-exageration is intentional): Slayer - World Painted Blood

@GetEveryone: I agree. I last saw them supporting Tool at Wembley a few years back, a little while after Blood Mountain came out. That night both of those bands played better than I had ever seen them play before. Still one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

I totally forgot about this album coming out this year.  I listened to 11th Dimension a few months back and was interested, but thanks to this thread I'm listening to the rest of the album now.

Don't worry if other people don't like the albums, listen to what you enjoy. Also, 21st Century Breakdown was a pretty good album, just not my type of music.

I have to go back and listen to a bunch of stuff before being able to decide on one :P
