What's your favourite multiplayer game?
Are you dazzled by the young? Nostalgic for the old? What multiplayer game has won your heart over?
Dark Souls 2 was the classiest multiplayer experience for me; helping people through Shrine of Amana, both summoning and getting summoned for bosses, taking on invaders as a blue or solo, that one bell tower location that was consistently mayhem, dueling on the bridge in Iron Keep, trying out builds in the arena, which was never too quick or one-sided. As someone who can rarely keep up in multiplayer games it all felt very rewarding.
Runners up go to Halo 1 system link, and Halo 2 online.
Unreal Chmapionship 2 and Unreal Tournament 2K4 will forever be my top two multiplayer jams. Haven't gotten around to trying out the new one yet, but whenever I build a new PC, it'll be one of if not the first thing I download.
I had to stop playing it because reasons, but I'll always hold a soft spot in my heart for DotA2 simply for the breadth of emotions I didn't know I could feel over the course of 45 minutes. That game is one of a kind. LoL and all that shit don't count! There is only one lord of the mobas and he does not share power.
And let me not forget Darkstalkers 3, DOA3/4/5, and Guilty Gear X2 #Reload/Xrd

Halo CE 12 player madness over lan, best FPS experience ever.
Halo 2 online, some serious hours put into this.
Medal of Honour Allied Assault
Original Call of Duty and Modern Warfare
Divekick, ps3. Was ranked number 1 player in world with my character of choice at one point.
More recently, Rocket League was my GotY.
And, of course, above all else, EverQuest.
Probably Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. It's not my most active game right now, I'm still regularly playing what's essentially the same game I've been playing for 16 years. I just spent all morning playing it and still had as much fun as I did over a decade ago with CS:S, CS 1.6, all the way back to Beta 5. It's a pure shooter without being bogged with with a bunch of unlocks, special abilities, vehicles, etc.

Battlefield 2 another clan game I had so much fun with.
Counter strike source I have 481 hours in according to steam first played this game in 07 gun game really is damn addictive.
1. I live and breathe Monster Hunter and me and my friend play this non stop whenever a new ones comes out. I finished Monster Hunter Iceborn and am now back on Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate until Rise comes out.
2. Rocket League. No matter if you're playing alone, 2v2 with a friend against other people online or having a party and play 2v2 locally. No matter how good your skills are, it's always a blast and it gets people hyped more than a FIFA game.
3. Mass Effect 3. I looooooved the horde mode in ME3's multiplayer mode, as a side thing it didn't have the right to be as good as it was. There were so many classes and races, so many skills combinations you could min/max until you made the perfect bionic god. ( they even added a volus!) All the Guns looked and felt satisfying to use. Then you had all the profile banners you could earn by completing tons of challenges.
4. LittleBigPlanet. Me and my friends love booting up LBP and just browsing through the user created levels playing Shark Attack levels, Cat Mario levels and other fun levels created by people.
@clagnaught: Mass Effect 3's multiplayer was surprisingly good. Also in EA's repertoire of absolutely unnecessary, yet shockingly competent, foray into multiplayer modes in traditionally single player games—Dead Space 2. An objective based, asymmetrical competitive mode akin to Left 4 Dead, with a big scoop of body horror. Too bad all of my experiences with it were plagued by bad network performance.
Speaking of asymmetrical multiplayer modes like Left 4 Dead; how about Left 4 Dead? Wow I played this game a lot.
Aliens vs Predator 2. I don't think it quite got the vibe right, but it was still a really interesting PVP thing with levels inspired by some of the best scifi set design in cinema history.
Unreal Tournament 2004. I like big levels with lots of vehicles.
Halo 2 & 3. I still liked big levels with lots of vehicles in 2007.
Gears of War. Small levels, no vehicles. But chainsaws are cool.
Burnout Paradise. Big level. Only vehicles. Friendly fun times.
Uno on the Xbox 360 so you can hope that you come across some weird shit.
All-time favorite would probably go to the digital version of "Sentinels of the Multiverse," if for nothing else than sheer amount of time spent.
"Dead By Daylight" is also up there, steep learning curve/barrier to entry/shitty community and all.
MK11 is definitely my favorite of the series to play online, but I actually enjoy Dragonball FighterZ more in terms of overall fighting games.
Super Street Fighter IV was a fixture in college, living in a house with 5 other dudes, you could find a game of it going literally 24 hours a day (we had very different work/class schedules).
And my lost love I'll never find again: Divekick. The most fun 2 weeks I've ever had with a game online.
Edit: I'm going to throw Mass Effect 3's multiplayer in here too, my roommate and I played that game A TON while it was active. He got lightly obsessed with it and was in the top 5% of player scores online for awhile, but never complained about having to drag my ass through the meta of Platinum Difficulty maps.
Grand Theft Auto Online. It still feels like a slapdash mess half the time and I can't imagine how excruciating it must be to play without a lot of money in the bank (I accrued a lot of Apology Cash over the years after giving it a shot on 360), but the heists are legitimately thrilling and the dumbass open world antics I've gotten up to with my friends rank among my best gaming memories. At its best, its mission design embodies the sandbox ethos of GTA miles more effectively than any of the series' single player missions.
Halo 3, ODST's Firefight mode (specifically the Lost Platoon map), Fibbage/Drawful/Quiplash, and Crusader Kings II are strong runners up.
Hmmmmmmm, what would I say, 4 years later...
Monster Hunter World, Souls Games, FFXIV.
Also, warms my heart to see folks remembering the ME3 mp fondly. When it came to Steam I came real close to picking it up just to get back into it. So fucking good when it has no goddamn right to be lol
Left 4 Dead 2 is probably my favorite co-op game. I think this game does a great job of having a lot of individual gameplay elements which on their own present interesting challenges (navigating around vs. crowning a Witch, dropping everything to fight a Tank, properly evading a Hunter, dashing through a crowd of zombies during a crescendo), which combines perfectly with the still-impressive AI Director, which does a really good job arranging those elements to form interesting combinations and generally keep the pacing of every mission exactly where you want it. It's immediately accessible, but has a lot of hidden depth (like crowning Witches, the high-risk, high-reward method to one-shot the deadliest enemy in the game by getting right up on her and hitting a specific spot in the nape of her neck with a shotgun).
My only complaint is that it's a hard game to play with a group with uneven skill levels. My old LAN party group all but banned this game because a lot of the people had barely played it and were still learning to navigate the maps, whereas I had all of them essentially memorized, including potential spawn locations for items.
Titanfall 2 is my favorite competitive game, although Respawn has almost outdone itself with Apex. The movement is just so so so so good, which contributes to an overall excellent sense of pacing. Maps feel grandiose and epic without the Battlefield problem of "oh I guess I'll drive across the map for five minutes to get to where the action is", and the sheer act of moving around is tons of fun. Populating a shooter map with AI was honestly a stroke of genius, because it does the triple duty of making the map always feel action-packed, always giving you something to shoot, and giving low-skill players something productive to do other than chasing other Pilots. The quality and fun of the movement alone would make this one of my favorite games, but the Titan v Titan and Titan v Pilot meta-play adds a whole other level.
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is my favorite fighting game. It has the frenetic energy of an anime fighter without being completely unparseable (seriously try to explain Guilty Gear mechanics to someone they're gibberish), and a really fun roster of serious picks and extreme goofball meme characters together, each of which is mechanically unique and interesting to the point where this game feels like an infinite web of possibility.
Phoenix Wright is in this game, and you can win a fight by convicting your opponent of murder. How is this not the greatest fighting game ever made.
Special shout-out to Section 8: Prejudice, which never got the love it deserved due to be shackled to Games For Windows Live. It was basically just Better Battlefield. You airdropped into the level at every respawn, which led to interesting meta-play around building anti-air turrets to shoot respawning players out of the sky. It solved the "on the other side of the big map from the action" problem by just letting you run very fast. On top of normal "capture the point" Conquest-style objectives, the game would randomly generate mini-objectives throughout the match that would help spice up the match or turn the tide, from escorting an NPC VIP across the map to having to hunt down every member of the enemy team within a time period.
