Just got myself a new desk, which I can now actually roll a chair underneath, allowing me to actually sit at the desk. A truly stunning feature for 2013. Also, I need suggestions for a 27 inch monitor.
Man, I'm getting back aches by proxy looking at some of the setups of you guys. A good chair is important. Leg room is important. Having your monitor at the proper height is important. Having space to rest your arms is important. Of course you all might not be as big a fellow as I am, so it might not be as bad for you as it would be for me, but my back and carpal tunnel would difintely scheme and kill me in a combined effort if I would sit down at some of the desks here for any prolonged period of time.
Seriously though, for heaven's sake look up a guide on desk ergonomics and get some big books to at least elevate your monitors a couple inches.
I'll make a photo of my desk after I clean it up (which I was actually planning on doing when I saw this thread). It's hardly the holy grail of ergonomics either, but it does at least allow me to sit down for hours on end.
Weird. I just took a picture last night. The monitor on the left is new, but I'm thinking about returning it because it has a bit of backlight bleed in the bottom/center of the screen. It's a $130 Asus IPS panel screen, though, so I'm not sure that I'll be able to get a replacement for it. Anyway:
@fattony12000: Looking at your set up, may I suggest going with a 24" one instead? I think with you sitting that close, a 27" monitor won't actually look as nice. A 24" 16:10 monitor would work perfectly.
Here's where I am at from 8:30AM to 12:00AM. Notice the work phone on the left; should answer why I am at my desk for 10 of those hours. I apologize for the shitty picture quality.
So here's mine. The main monitor doubles as my TV as well when I turn it around like so:
It's a bit of a hassle to actually get to my chair, but because I have limited space in my room and a big-ass couch which takes up about half of it, this little nook is really the only place I have for my desk without it invading my living space any more than it's already doing.
It's still pretty much just this, except I have a different stereo, a better chair, a better KB/M, and an actual computer with the laptop sitting somewhere else. Oh, and a tiny black desk on wheels for my KB/M.
(Sorry for the blur) Nothing super fancy and the only thing that's changed is I have an upgraded webcam and a desk chair. (Was using a medicine ball as a chair for a bit)
It maybe the worst set up, but I love it. If everything pulls through with this job, I could finally give my M11x lappy to my little sister while I build my system.
@fattony12000: You could get one of them cheap (relative) South Korean monitors that are all the rage. I think Monoprice started making their own branded, decently affordable 27'' IPS displays too. TyCobb does have a point, though. For your space, 24'' might be more reasonable, unless of course, you want your entire field of view stuffed with monitor, and to have to actually move your whole head to see the entire display, which is sort of awesome too.
Since I just got my PC recently, i don't have a desk or monitor, so I'm using my 50" LG Plasma as a monitor. Games look great, but it's not ideal for everything else.
Here's a shameless view into exactly how slightly messy and slightly clean my desk is at any given time. 2 19inch monitors you can tell I owned the left one first and didn't think of how 'short' another newer 19inch would be if widescreen.... hah. My PC is maybe not powerful enough to push full 1080p just yet anyways so I've been happy to live with them until I have a comfortable $2k to drop after the next consoles come to update my PC and all that.
I used to own a big box type subwoofer that I loved putting my feet up on, and recently got some new working speakers but the sub is a cylinder that I can't put feet on and I'm sad. I knocked it a few times when my feet instinctual went up quickly... lol. Thinking if stuffing the old woofer in there JUST as a fuckin' foot rest again... have literally used it as such for years and years I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN LIVE WITHOUT IT!!! omg my issues in life!
Also taking this image highlights that I'd very much love a new, way slimmer desk setup.. I don't think about it often cause it's been perfectly fine forever but I've had it since I was in college and when I actually used some of the drawers and shit which I do not use anymore at all. it's also heavy as sin.

When I rock a controller on the PC I'll roll back a couple of feet, for...'work' I like getting all up in them pixel guts. Jeff is very much in the same camp as me when it comes to that style of desk/screen combination.

I am partial to some light view stuffing of an occasional weekend. I'm also aware of both the South Korean and Monoprice stuff, unfortunately living in the UK means I get to be somewhat fucked by both options, due to shipping and exchange rates. Also, being unemployed for about a year hasn't helped, although that situation has recently changed (insert link to my long-delayed March blog here).
this is a few days after i got the big one(only 1080p 31" tv i could find). all monitors are connected now, had to get the right connector for the minidp port.
and yes it's a supposed to be a kitchen table, moved provinces and no room for my big desk.
Anyway, I don't really have a desk, just a 32" TV on a tv stand with the keyboard and mouse on two folding tables pushed together. The TV is actually 6 years old, but it still works fine and the image quality is good as it has ever been. It's only 720p, which has been fine with only consoles and non-gaming PCs hooked up to it for years, but since I recently upgraded my PC (and with new consoles on the way) I've been thinking about upgrading to a 1080p TV.
Off camera is my desk chair, a pretty nice (if a little worn) high-back swivel chair and the game consoles which are on the bottom shelf of the tv stand.
I am deeply disappointed at the standard human levels of cleanliness and decency that these photos show. I was expecting some piles of garbage, old food and filthy desks to make me feel better about the state of mine. You've let me down with your self respect!
