Anyway to tell if this is an original controller without opening it?

This looks genuine to me. The quality of the text print on the controller, the button and analog stick texture, and the back of the box multi language descriptions all seems right. If it's fake, it'd be hard to tell without opening it at least for me.

Those look like the boxes I remember those coming in, I just can't remember ever holding a blue one...I feel like I didn't start seeing the "see-through" design till after-market controllers started showing up but I live sort of in the boonies and hardware has always been oddly scarce out here

This looks like the Canadian packaging, yes.
