Just thought I'd share this fun throwback since @janman cursed us with the knowledge of the new Nintendo Switch Popeye game late last year. I was watching an old unarchived stream of Japanese Famicom and Super Famicom games (as one does) when the original Popeye game made an appearance. Starts at 1:45:56 in this video.
I had been meaning to look at it since Jeff mentioned on stream that the new game was basically a remake of this arcade original. Sure enough, while it's 2D and more Donkey Kong-esque, it's clear where all the inspiration for the new game came from. Catch hearts! catch letters! Run around a pirate ship! Power up with spinach!
The original looks like more fun, which is probably not a surprise.
