I "beat" the Witness, as far as I was concerned, about a week after it came out. The whole time, something was eating away at the back of my mind... I had played the game before. Not literally, I have zero contact with Jon Blow. At first I was sure it was just the obvious Myst parallels gnawing at my subconscious. In the process of going through my Steam collection on my new Windows 10 install, however, I ran across FRACT OSC, and realized it has almost exactly the same structure.
Rather than logic mazes, you get synthesizer puzzles. Otherwise, the games are eerily similar, with their focus on learning, avoiding text, puzzle solving, environmental design, visual design, audio design (other than the inclusion of musical elements), hidden secrets, and a few other things. They even use the some control conceit of the "one button activates interaction, other button interacts," although FRACT will let you walk around in that mode.
I could carry the analysis deeper, but I'm mildly afraid it would demonstrate that I am either crazy or completely misreading one or the other game, so I'm gonna ask you folks: are FRACT and The Witness super similar or is it just me?
