Franky was originally an orphan named Cutty Flam that was raised as the shipwright apprentice of Tom the Builder on Water Seven. When Tom was arrested for building the Ororo Jackson, the pirate ship of the Pirate King Gold Roger; his sentence was suspended to provide him time to build a Sea Train to help the struggling city. Cutty and Iceburg, his fellow apprentice, aided Tom to build the Sea Train. It took several years to complete, but Spandam of the World Government framed Tom for attacking Water Seven using Cutty's own personal fleet of mini battle ships.

As Spandam took Tom to Eneis Lobby via the Sea Train, Cutty tried to stand in its path and was run over. Heavily injured, Cutty drifted to a ship where he modified his own body to become a cyborg and returned to Water Seven several years later. Iceburg was now the mayor of the prospering Water Seven, and informed Cutty that the World Government was looking for him to find the plans for the ancient weapon Pluton, that Tom had intrusted to his apprentices. Changing his name to Franky, he took in the dregs of the city to form the Franky Family.

Franky is a main character from the manga series One Piece that is both written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. The series began its serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 4, 1997. Franky wouldn't appear in the series until the Water Seven Arc in 2004.

    Major Story Arcs

    Water Seven Arc

When the Franky Family robed the Straw Hat Pirates of two million berry, Franky took that money to buy the wood of the famous tree Adam. When he returned, he found the Franky Family had been devastated by the Straw Hats. Franky hunted down Luffy, the Straw Hat captain, to avenge his men, but the battle was halted by the news that Iceburg had been attacked and nearly killed. Later that day, the CP-9, the black-ops team of the World Government, abducted him after they learned he was really Cutty Flam and possibly held the plan to Pluton.

    Enies Lobby Arc

Franky was freed on the Sea Train on the way to Enies Lobby and was freed by Sanji, the Straw Hat cook. He was there to rescue Nico Robin, who was also held by CP-9. They battled up through the train, but Franky was recaptured and taken to Enies Lobby with Nico Robin. After he escaped his chains, Franky fought along with the Straw Hats to find which of the CP-9 had the key to Robin's Sea Prism cuffs before she was rushed off the island by Spandam. Franky battled with Fukuro, then he helped Nami halt the rampage of Chopper, who had transformed into a monster.

Franky was given the key to Robin's cuffs and was sent ahead to free her as Luffy battled with Rob Lucci of the CP-9. Frnaky and the crew escaped the island on the Going Merry, but it cracked in half on the journey back to Water Seven. They were rescued by Iceburg's ship, and back home Franky offered to build a new ship for the Straw Hats using the wood he bought with their stolen money. Upon its completion, Luffy convinced a reluctant Franky to join his crew as shipwright. They named the ship the Thousand Sunny.
