A tile-matching puzzle game from Raptisoft and PopCap, where you slide around cute multi-colored "chuzzles" to pop them from the board.

Overview

Chuzzle, known in paid releases as Chuzzle Deluxe, is a tile-matching puzzle game developed by Raptisoft and published digitally by PopCap Games for the PC (Platform) on May 16, 2005, with a free version for web browsers on July 6, 2005, and a mail-in CD release on August 24, 2005. It later received a digital Steam (Concept) release on August 30, 2006 (which received Mac (Platform) support on May 12, 2010) and a retail release (by MumboJumbo) on May 30, 2007.

Starring multi-colored fuzzballs (the eponymous "Chuzzles"), Chuzzle plays similarly to PopCap's earlier game Bejeweled (Game) in that players manipulate a filled grid-shaped board to form matches of three or more pieces (which are the Chuzzles themselves) to clear them from the board, potentially causing cascading matches from gravity (including new pieces dropping from the top). Differing from Bejeweled is that instead of swapping two pieces, players attempt to form matches by dragging entire rows and columns, which wrap around the board similar to Yoshi's Cookie.

The game also received releases for mobile devices, including the iPhone (Platform) on December 8, 2009 (with touchscreen controls), which later received two successors from Raptisoft themselves: Chuzzle 2 (Game) and Chuzzle Snap! (Game). It also received a limited-edition "Christmas" variant, updating the graphics and sound to be more festive.

Gameplay

In Chuzzle, players are given a 6×6 grid of Chuzzles and must slide entire rows and columns (which wrap around the grid) using the mouse to form groups of three or more of the same color and clear them from the board. In most modes, each shift of a row/column must form a match (otherwise it gets brought back to its original position). Clearing more at once, along with chain matches, award more points and can potentially grant two special types of Chuzzles:

  • Having a large empty space on the board sometimes drop in a 2×2 "Fat Chuzzle", which makes it so that both rows and both columns they're in can only be shifted as one. This can potentially cause easier matches due to the two-row or two-column cursor, but can be more problematic with Locked Chuzzles. While they count as a single Chuzzle, they grant more points due to taking up more space. Fat Chuzzles are removed during scrambles and level clears.
  • Clearing five or more connected Chuzzles of the same color at once turns the center-most piece into a glowing "Super Chuzzle" instead. A Super Chuzzle that is matched causes all of its surrounding Chuzzles (in a 3×3 square) to be cleared as well. The number of Super Chuzzles retain on the grid during scrambles and level clears, with random Chuzzles becoming Super.

Additionally, the Classic and Speed modes make use of Locked Chuzzles, in which random Chuzzles have a "lock" on them that makes their entire row and column unshiftable. Clearing Locked Chuzzles from the board grant bonus points.

Game Modes

There are four game modes to choose from in paid versions, with a fifth one that is unlockable. In the free browser version, only Classic is available.

Classic Chuzzle

The game's standard level-based mode where players score as many points as they can before they can no longer make a valid move, progressing through levels of increasing difficulty.

Each level starts with a new board of random Chuzzles, and is cleared once the flask at the left is filled up (by matching Chuzzles, with larger matches filling up a larger portion). As players progress through the levels, the game increases its difficulty both by increasing the amount of colors and by speeding up the rate Chuzzles become Locked (which happens after a certain amount of matches are made), but also increases the score multiplier.

This mode makes use of limited-use "scrambles", which serve as the game's "lives" and resets the board once a valid move cannot be made. Additional scrambles are rewarded after reaching a certain amount of score, and the game ends once all scrambles are used up and a valid move can no longer be made.

There are two difficulties for this mode: "Casual" and "Expert". Expert difficulty increases the score multiplier, but makes Locked Chuzzles appear more frequently.

Speed Chuzzle

An action-puzzle variation of Classic mode where instead of Chuzzles being Locked after making matches, a unique real-time gauge fills up over time that causes a random Chuzzle to become Locked each time it becomes full (resetting after each time). Clearing Chuzzles pushes that gauge back, and the gauge fills up faster the more levels progressed.

Like Classic, the game includes both Casual and Expert difficulties, with the latter increasing the score multiplier, but also speeding up the rate the gauge fills up.

Zen Chuzzle

A casual endless mode with no lose condition (as Locked pieces are unused and the game automatically scrambles when no valid moves can be made).

Instead of leveling up, filling up the flask instead produces a cosmetic Chuzzle outside of the play area, and producing five of them in a single game causes a new cosmetic "trinket" to appear in all subsequent plays of the mode. It can take several hours to unlock all trinkets, which can be upgraded to golden trinkets.

Mind Bender

A casual puzzle variation where players are given pre-arranged boards and must shift rows and columns until each board matches the correct pattern shown. There are 20 levels in total, each with 5 boards to solve (for a total of 100).

Unlike other modes, this one does not include any tile-clearing, and players can freely shift a row or column without making a match. While there are no Locked Chuzzles, some boards make use of Fat Chuzzles.

BeChuzzed

A secret unlockable game mode and a nod to PopCap's game Bejeweled (Game), BeChuzzed replaces the Chuzzles with gems of different shapes and colors (with graphics from the earliest versions of the "Diamond Mine" version and sounds from the later Bejeweled releases). There are no scrambles and one single endless level, and none of the special pieces (Fat, Super, or Locked) are used.
