Overview

Spawn: In the Demon's Hand is a 3D dark contemporary-fantasy third-person shooter developed and released by Capcom for arcades (using Dreamcast-based Sega NAOMI hardware) in January 2000. Based on the anti-hero superhero comic book franchise Spawn (Franchise), In the Demon's Hand is a free-movement arena combat game featuring several of the comic series's characters, each with their own unique loadout and abilities. Up to four machines can be linked up for both co-operative play or standard deathmatches (team-based or free-for-all). It later received a home conversion for the Dreamcast in Japan (on August 10, 2000), North America (on October 1, 2001), and Europe (by Eidos Interactive (Company) on January 19, 2001). It also received a spiritual successor with another licensed property (the Heavy Metal (Franchise) comics magazine) as Heavy Metal Geomatrix (Game).

Gameplay

Controls

The original arcade game uses a one-joysitck, four-button configuration:

A - Attack
B - Jump
C - Weapon Change
D - View Adjust

Game Modes

Based on how many cabinets are linked, players can play one of three separate game modes:

Boss Attack (1-4 players) - Single-player or co-operative play, with all players teaming up to take down unique boss opponents and their goons in the time limit (with deaths further depleting time). Multiplayer games include bonus boss battles.
Team Battle (2-4 players) - Team deathmatch, either in a 2v2 (with various human and CPU player combinations) or a 3v3 (with one human player having two CPU allies). The team with the most points at the time limit wins.
Battle Royal (3-4 players) - Free-for-all deathmatch. The player with the most points at the time limit wins.

The Dreamcast version adds split-screen multiplayer, as well as bonus extended versions of the Team Battle and Battle Royal modes ("Tournament Mode").

Characters

Spawn: In the Demon's Hand features a total of 37 playable characters, with twelve unlocked right from the beginning. Hidden characters are unlocked by beating the game's boss mode with a certain character. Each character has their own unique loadout, all of which include their bare fists. Some of their weapons are not accessible from the start in Boss Attack
