Just picked it up and I'm not impressed
I have to say, Gears of War is probably one of the most disappointing games I've played in a while. I can't stand the half ass story line and the shitty voice acting. The environments are ridiculously repetative, and the multiplayer isn't very welcoming at all. I found myself getting killed right off the bat with no idea why or how I died. The camera is not well suited at all to the kind of gameplay it uses either. Someone please tell me what I'm not seeing. I have to say even Halo 3 beats the shit out of this multiplayer.
The multiplayer isn't for everyone But I think the reason most people were originally drawn to the game was it's grittiness. It definitely doesn't shy away from blood, curb stomping, chainsaws, etc.
Yeah I agree. The blood and gore is about the only thing done right in the game. Even the shooting feels clunky. Having to aim with the left trigger to even be somewhat accurate isn't ideal for the kind of multiplayer it sports. Online, everyone is so good now that it was impossible for me to fire an accurate shot before being sniped or chainsawed. I can't say I agree with most critics on this one. Just doesn't hold together in my book.
Meh... the first one sucked ass, the second was was actually fun if you had a friend to play it with.
As a blue namer I know I won't have much of an opinion on this, but even when I owned a 360 I prefered Halo.
I really enjoyed what I saw of the first Gears. I've not played it all the way through but I'd be compelled to if I owned a 360.
Just saying, while yeah a forum's a great place to express an opinion...this thread doesn't really stimulate any good conversation.
Giving you some legit advice is all. Selling bad games is fun!
It started the cover system trend. Your problem is in playing it a couple years late. It's not like those Gears one reviews were done last week, after all the OTHER active-cover games refined things, including Gears 2. It was very much clunky, but you don't notice when there's nothing to compare it to.
you know what? every damn bad thing you said about the game is true.
and you know what ? when i played it i had so much fun my balls exploded.
@Jeff:
I know, but in all honesty, there are games that do age well, but I guess Gears of War is not that kind of game. And I agree with it's influence. The cover system was ingenious when it came out in 06.
dude i got it around midnight and went to bed, woke up at 11 a.m. , called my cousin, he came over and we played nonstop til 8 pm ... are you fucking kidding me, OP? its explosive fun its damn amazing! dont try to be a critic, just be a dude playing a shooting game and you'll see how you're gonna drown in the action" @Ahmad_Metallic said:

It would also be different if I could actually see the cover system actually USED in the multiplayer aspect of the game. I noticed that the trend was to run up to your enemy and blindly fire a shotgun in his face, which isn't much fun at all if you've just come from the campaign, in which you absolutely must use cover to survive. It's similar to situations in other games where players exploit a single weapon or tactic resulting in boring gameplay. I dunno, I guess it was stupid of me to hope for a slower, more tactical multiplayer.
Don't judge me, but I've had Xbox Live for about 3 weeks so far and I can't put down Halo 3. It's addicting as hell, even if I have to put up with obnoxious twelve year olds yelling insults about how good my mother is in the sack.

HAhahahahahhahahahahahahhahahhahah WOW, love people that say this..so you sucked ass at the first one...i loved the first one the second one is fucking horrinble and laggy. Fuck EPIC GAMES
I like both Gears of War games. I found the controls to be tight and responsive. However, it controls very differently to other shooters and has a slower pace. If you can't adjust to this, then yes, you will hate the game.
I can't believe so many of you guys hate the first gears, and i can't believe epic listend to all those people who were horrible at the game cuz Oo i got killed by the shotgun in 1 hit oooo This game is so gay, ooooo a 1 hit shotgun killl Noooo How is this Possible A shotgun killed me in 1 hit up close? Noooooo
I really enjoyed both Gears single player campaigns but the multiplayer, especially in the second, is terrible.
"However if you tried Gears 2 you would be happy that they improve on some of the story telling despite it still being your average setting to put you in the given situations."Wow... I haven't played Gears 1, but did you just say they improved the storytelling in 2? The story in 2 was one of the worst video game stories I've ever seen, so I can't imagine how bad the first game's story must have been.
I just also picked up the first gears. My first impressions was that it was over rated and that there was nothing good about it. But as a couple weeks went by and I went through it I found it a solid game. The Mp also took a little time to get in because anyone that plays the first one is mostly a skilled gears player but you find a way.
Yes that's true, but they ruined the game for me personally. I loved going out in the first gear with my shotgun and taking down a whole team, now you can;t walk 5 meters before getting knocked down by a smoke. Why would they change the shotgun? They put stupid shit in the game like the smoke grenades to give noobs a change, so they made the game cheap and it takes no skill anymore which is sad
Don't forget the context of the game. This was one of the first games to make that "stop and pop" cover system into a very fluid and functional game mechanic. Revolutionary, in a way. Thus, lots of praise.
