After the cult success of their 8-bit Master System, Sega decided to give gamers a taste of their arcade capabilities with a 16-bit console. Known worldwide as the Mega Drive but called Genesis in the US, it provided graphics and sound a couple of steps below their popular System 16 arcade cabinets. The Mega Drive/Genesis turned out to be Sega's most successful console.

UK distributor Blaze are releasing a portable version of the Mega Drive/Genesis in the UK at the end of august. It costs £30 ($60, but since we pay more tax if it gets released in America it'll probably be more like $40-50). Its not quite as good as it sounds, since it doesn't come with any card/disk system of playing games, it simply comes loaded with 20 games and you are stuck with them. There are some good games available though:

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

    Alien Storm
    Altered Beast
    Arrow Flash
    Columns 3
    Crack Down
    Decap Attack
    Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
    Ecco the Dolphin
    Ecco Junior
    E Swat
    Flicky
    Gain Ground
    Golden Axe
    Jewel Master
    Kid Chameleon
    Sonic and Knuckles
    Sonic Spinball
    Shadow Dancer
    Revenge of Shinobi

I am really tempted to get one. I'm a bit worried about the quality of the LCD screen for that price, but if the quality ends up being just half decent then for £30 its a bargain. And if it sells well I'm sure it'll get across the pond to you guys in the US, and if it does really well maybe they could even release new machines with different games on. Fingers crossed for streets of rage. Here is the official website.

So, what do you guys think about it?

EDIT: Here is the promotional video from the website:

No, you're not the only one that thinks it's cool.  I'm with you on being cautious over the fixed list of games, but I'd get it just because it's an awesome idea to begin with.  Of course, I would get to play some Kid Chameleon on the go...

I just wish Sega had done it.  I like buying things with a Sega logo on them.

I think it's kind of cool...just not the "20 games I'm stuck with" part. And I already have a portable Genesis player...my Sega Nomad! :P

Yeah, but it makes good business sense. Adding another full portable games console to the market would be financial suicide. Publishers wouldn't support it. it would end up like the gizmondo. Doing a cheap portable console with built in games will sell. I'm just happy I'll be able to play all those games on the go.

Yep, no one can compete with the likes of nintendo, so they just take the tetris handheld approach (are those things still sold?), though i dont know if it will sell well because of downloads and/or compilations already out there.

I was going to pick this up months ago but the list of games isnt what id really want. I love Kid Chamelon, Columns, Alex Kidd, Golden Axe and Revenge of Shinobi but most of them I can already play on my PSP (Sega Mega Drive Collection) and though I dont have Revenge of Shinobi on it I have Shinobi 3 (though I prefare revenge. If it was maybe £10 id pick it up instantly but with the current list of games I cant see the need.

Fingers crossed they get more/diffrent games though because then id love it.
