They usually change the name of stuff when they localize it in another country. So, no reason, really?

I would guess because "Genesis" tested better than "Mega Drive" in some marketing survey way back when.

No idea, but I always though Mega Drive sounded cooler than Genesis.

MASTER system, MEGA drive, SUPER nintendo, ULTRA 64... what was with console names back then? I think Sega did right by avoiding that style.

I believe the name "Mega Drive" was already copyrighted in the US, so legally they had to go with a different name. I could be wrong though.

I like Genesis. 

I think it had something to do with Sega not being able to get the rights to call it "Mega Drive" in the USA because another company claimed it. Therefore, they named it "Genesis". A cooler name if you ask me.

They were trying to sell the console to bible belters in the US by calling it Genesis aka a new dawn. Not a lot of people know this but fervent evangelicals loved them some Sonic back in the day. The series was shunned and started going downhill when it was later found that Tails was a homosexual.

I love the name Genesis too, but I heard about it before I knew it was a bible thing or a prog rock band. The book of Genesis will always invoke Sonic the Hedgehog for me.
