After the cult success of their 8-bit Master System, Sega decided to give gamers a taste of their arcade capabilities with a 16-bit console. Known worldwide as the Mega Drive but called Genesis in the US, it provided graphics and sound a couple of steps below their popular System 16 arcade cabinets. The Mega Drive/Genesis turned out to be Sega's most successful console.

With the Mini NES being a reasonably nostalgic hit, it seems Sega is kinda interested in sharing that nostalgic feel to the world, albeit in a low-key indirect way.

Some company in Brazil has decided to produce their own batch of old-school Sonic fun by making an exact replica of the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive actually, since it's the European model), and Sega has blessed them with approval and official badge branding. While it does take (European) cartridges, this is the twenty-first century, so it has a slot to accept SD cards for emulation games. And with that, the console already comes with an SD card packed with the following games:

    1. ALEX KIDD
    2. ALIEN STORM
    3. ALTERED BEAST
    4. ARROW FLASH
    5. BONANZA BROTHERS
    6. COLUMNS
    7. DECAP ATTACK
    8. E-SWAT
    9. FATAL LABYRINTH
    10. FLICKY
    11. GAIN GROUND
    12. GOLDEN AXE
    13. GOLDEN AXE 3
    14. JEWEL MASTER
    15. KID CHAMELEON
    16. LAST BATTLE
    17. OUT RUNNERS
    18. SEGA SOCCER
    19. SHADOW DANCER
    20. SHINOBI 3
    21. SONIC 3
    22. TURBO OUTRUN

It's a pretty specific list, right? I think this is cool, but a little weird. Is Sega trying to test the waters quietly to see if people still do feel the Genesis love, or are they just doing whatever they want with their properties?

Well, lack of HDMI makes it mostly useless.

Yeah I thought that was a weird omission. SD card slot but no HDMI?

They've had either the exact same device, or something almost the same for a couple years now

I feel like Tec Toy has done a lot with the Sega Master System in the past (the recent past, too) so seeing this isn't TOO surprising. I guess they're just moving up a console generation?

Man, makes me want to play Alex Kidd for some godforsaken reason though. Those games are horse's ass.

I doubt Sega even has anything to do with this outside of whatever license they sold. A few company's have had the license for Genesis tv consoles things over the last decade. Hell even the third version of the actual Genesis was a third party console.

@71ranchero: Yeah, there are quite a few of these around and most seem to emanate from Brazil. I've got a portable one.

@ghost_cat: I thought that, but the D-pad is poor, battery life terrible and the screen is really small. It also takes forever to boot games from the SD card slot.

On the plus side, it's pretty cheap and the emulation they use is decent.

From what I just read in an article, this is specifically for the Brazilian market, as the Genenis is still popular there. That probably explains why there is no HDMI port on them. TecToy was also the company making the Genesis back in the days. There are specific import laws in Brazil, so Sega partnered with them in order to be able to penetrate the market, which apparently they did quite well.

So it's probably not going to be available to you if you live outside of Brazil.

Yeah this kind of thing has been about for a good while now, probably a couple years. In fact my best friend bought one a couple weeks back.
