I feel the same way. All of these separate Youtube channels, the switch to dumb thumbnails, and this whole "we need to market to the teens" look that are clearly the result of some upper management really kind of rub me the wrong way. I don't think Giant Bomb has changed but you can definitely tell that the monetization of their output sure has.

@rorie: I try to subscribe to youtube, but when I click Verify I get redirected to Google login, and then to Cnet's contest page lol and every time I come back to this page my entries are gone!

I don't think GB's core ethos will ever change but if we can leverage our synergies to better market our core competencies to reach today's tweenagers in ways that maximize our brand leverage, then we'll continue to explore those avenues of expansion in Q1 to emphasize our fiscal performances.

But seriously, we've done plenty of giveaways in the past on UPF and elsewhere. This might be a bit more official than what we've done in the past but I apologize if it feels off to you! Blame me!

Official giveaway with CBS Interactive partners as opposed to the UPF giveaways. That's alright by me. I was able to enter just gone via the site on my phone.

The first time it brought me to the same page. After logging into Google and navigating back the giveaway the Verify worked fine.

@rorie Thanks for including the GB community in the giveaway. I personally think this is fine, maybe not what we're used to but that's not GB's fault. I am happy to have a chance to win stuff :) This giveaway for the most part doesn't seem super intrusive when compared to some of the other contests I've seen. All you have to do here really is navigate to some specific pages if only for a second and subscribe to some Youtube channels which can be unsubscribed to just as easily. (Most of which I was already subscribed to, if you're not on that Beastcast/Bombcast Clip tip yo, what're ya doin?)

I don’t think this is bad, they’re just giving members the option to get in on a competition that their sister sites regularly do. Totally optional, and up front that it’s a CBSi think they were asked if they wanted in on.

Note though, that this comp isn’t available to users in countries with Gdpr and good privacy laws. Like Jeff said on UPF “read the terms and maybe make sure you’re cool with it”

It's kinda wild to me people going out of their way to call this gross or concerning. You don't like it? Don't participate? Wanna unsubscribe as soon as you earn the entry? Go ahead? This literally doesn't effect anyone in any way except positively.

I know its all down to legal mumbo jumbo and what not but it really does make international users kind of feel like second class citizens when we're always excluded.

Oof... Spending $1000,- that's probably tax deductible across 3 websites to see all your internet numbers go up has to be one of the cheapest marketing ploys imaginable. I'm not sure things like holiday spirit and goodwill really apply here.

I think at one point I heard someone on the bombcast say that simply being self aware of your bullshit doesn't make said bullshit not be bullshit anymore. Ya'll in my book have more than enough credit to get away with it this time, but I would not like to see this becoming some kind of new direction for the site.

That said, I can see why when given the option you'd choose to include the GB crowd in this, so I'm not as mad as I might sound. Just offering my feedback that this tastes kinda iffy.

Also, while I'm criticizing, it's only fair to also applaud the other promotion. A 30 day free trial is legit awesome and I recommend everyone to check that one out and maybe consider becoming a regular subscriber if you're happy with all the premium stuff that's on offer. I know I am.
