    Overview

Golden Axe: The Duel is a 2D high-fantasy weapon-based fighting game developed and released by Sega for arcades (using Saturn-based Sega ST-V hardware) on January 17, 1995.

A spin-off of the Golden Axe hack-and-slash series (and the last game in the series for 14 years), The Duel chronicles numerous warriors of the lands of Yuria (some of whom are descendants of the series's original heroes) as they fight to possess the mythical Golden Axe (previously wielded by the series's main villain, Death Adder).

Along with standard high-fantasy fare, the game makes numerous references to the previous games in the series. For example, the game's Super Meter is represented by magic potions, which must be picked up by attacking small elven thieves that run around the battlefield. The name and concept themselves are also based on "The Duel" versus mode in the Genesis port of the original game.

Known as the first game released for the ST-V (Sega Titan Video) cartridge-based arcade system, it was later ported to the Sega Saturn on September 29, 1995 (in Japan), late 1995 (in Europe), and June 27, 1996 (in North America).

    Characters

The game includes 10 playable fighters and 1 unplayable boss (the personification of the legendary Golden Axe). While some characters are descendants of the series's original heroes, only one character is lifted directly from the games (the villain Death Adder).
