    Quote:
Gran Turismo 5 will feature over 1000 cars, the most ever in the series. It’s a collection of the hottest and most desirable cars from around the world, both past and present.

There are two tiers of cars in Gran Turismo 5--Premium cars and Standard cars. The differences between the two are as follows:

    PREMIUM CARS

    :
From the seductive curves of exotic sports cars, to the inviting sight of the road ahead when you slide into the driver’s seat and peer past the glass, down to the intricately detailed instrument panel and dashboard... Every one of the over 200 premium cars recreate every last detail of the car, inside and out.

Gran Turismo 5 contains over 200 of these "Premium" level cars.

    STANDARD CARS

    :
The massive lineup of cars from past Gran Turismo games has been beautifully recreated through the latest technology and the Playstation 3’s cutting-edge graphics.

Gran Turismo 5 feature an astounding 800+ cars, a vast collection covering a wide range of eras and categories.

So basically rather than fully new car models they are taking 800 or so cars from GT4 and putting high-res textures on them. Does this mean no in-car views for them? Not sure. It seems weird as some of the old cars even SAY Gran Turismo 4 on them. What have they been working on for 5 years I have to wonder.

Makes sense, why redo the whole god forsaken process when you have hi-res versions of the PS2 car models.

I'm pretty sure they had to modify those models to be lower poly on GT4 but with GT5 they can go all out.

Too bad they didn't get data on the interiors though...

Most art teams work with high resolution originals, then optimize them down to the current project.  This means later on when the tech will inevitably be better, they will have the assets ready to go on a new product.  While one might read this and see lazy production, it's actually very smart and saves a lot of time and work.

My only problem with it is, if they had so much already, what took so damn long?

Not really that smart. Forza 3 had over 400 new car models, they didn't use any Forza 2 work. It just seems weird. It might not be super ugly but those standard models definitely look worse than Forza 3. For example the headlights are just flat textures.

Oh well. Polygon count doesn't mean nearly as much today with all these shader effects.

I can confirm that only the premium models will have cockpit views, the 800 standard cars won't.

Fucking Sony, they're nuts. I was interested in buying a PS3 for this but I'd rather buy a decent wheel for my 360.

The worst thing about GT series is the sound, and they haven't improved in in this version. The collision sound is the worst, it sounds like hitting a plastic bin with a stick. The engine sounds are poor also.

Oh man, I cannot wait to have this game come out and have everyone wonder why the fuck it took so long.  Unless they spent all this time coding the most amazing racing AI the world has ever seen.

Thats because you have been seeing the 200 premium cars they have been showing since GT5 was announced. It's only been recently that the 'other' 800 cars are low in polygons.

Your thread title is a bit misleading, you assume alot.

It's easier to edit an existing model and add polys, than remodel from scratch. Theres more work involved than just retexturing, using past assets is just sensible.
All these quotes tell us is that 200+ of the cars have had every inch recreated perfectly and the other 800+ will have similar racing/road interiors.

Saying the cars will have lower polygon counts is an awful lot to read into "recreated". My reading of it is they've started with the scans etc they had of the cars all those cars sitting around and rebuilt them using the GT5 engine I would not think it was a simple texture swap. The very fact that those cars still have the damage model (albeit without the panel separation of premium cars) alone supports that.

@xyzygy: yea but Forza interior models aern't to exact detail they're kinda random. Like they're specific to the car but it isn't liek they went into a car and modeled it 1to1

not to mention, alot of the interiors of cars dont work. like in some cars with digital gauge clusters. i think as a minimum GT5 will have fully animated clusters and gauges.

What it means is that you will only be able to use headtracking and look around the 200 premium cars, the other 800 will of course still have the traditional "cockpit" views, you just won't be able to look at the backseats etc.

More cars means a better chance that your favourite cars will be in there.  I wouldn't want 1000 songs in Rock Band either because a lot would be crap and you'd be required to play them.  In GT5 you can just stick with a few favourite cars to win your races.  For some people though, it is a game about collecting cars, and so if they only had like 100 cars, then people would be bummed out that so many well known cars were missing.

Wait wait wait, so the vast majority of the cars in this game will NOT have an in-car view? If so that is a deal breaker for me. No excuse for the length of time and not getting the 100% full experience. If that is the case.

I'm not much of a driving game fan but thats kind of stupid.
After the game taking so long to come out and charging $40 for what amounts to a demo you'd think they could have found the time to round out the rest of the line up.

I think there has been some kind of misinterpretation here. Have you ever played GT4 in 1080i? the cars look amazing! so when they are actually scaled up to the PS3 they will still look great.
