Grand Theft Auto 2 is better than it's predecessor with better graphics, better mechanics and a cool live-action intro.

The original Grand Theft Auto was released in 1998 for the original PlayStation. Despite the game's decent graphics and cool open-ended gameplay, it was rather difficult at times to drive on the road, shoot people and get to places sometimes within a triggered time-limit. So when Grand Theft Auto 2 came out in 1999, surprisingly, it turned out to be better than it's predecessor in every way possible and it fixed the flaws that was plagued in the first game.

You play as Claude Speed (the guy that was also in Grand Theft Auto III) and work for 7 gangs in a city named none other than "Anywhere USA''. There's definitely a story behind this, mostly explained in the live-action opening of the game. 7 gangs are at war with each other: The Zaibatsu, Loonies, Yakuza, SRS, Rednecks, Russian Mafia and Hare Krishna. So there's the story, besides, the original GTA never had a story behind the game.

Graphically, the game is much better looking than in the original GTA. Claude Speed looks great (especially in Top-Down view), the cities looks more alive and better built and with more and better designed pedestrians. The gameplay mechanics are much improved from the previous game as well. One of the several nice additions to the game is that now your character has the ability to jump with the use of the R1 button, which makes it easy to jump over platforms and cars. The walking is better this time around (especially walking backwards) and driving doesn't feel slippery on the road and stays perfectly straight. GTA 2 has a higher weapon count than the previous game, you can now use: Micro Uzi Machine Guns, Rocket Launchers, Molotov Cocktails, Flamethrowers and more. Aiming and shooting is improved with the use of D-pad to aim and R2 button to shoot, which is much better than using the O button. Body Armor is more appropriately used this time around with a limit of 10, instead of 3 from the previous game. The police are much tougher this time around with the addition of the SWAT team, Special Agent Cars and the Army. When you kill people on the street, eventually an ambulance will come by; something that wasn't included in the previous entry.

The purpose of a sequel is make something: bigger, badder and better; and this is the case with Grand Theft Auto 2. Rockstar Games did a better job with making this entry in the series than Take 2 Interactive did with the original. With that said, Grand Theft Auto 2 is better than it's predecessor with better graphics, better mechanics and a cool live-action intro. Remember, "Respect is Everything''. 4 out of 5.
