Yeah, MGS4 has long cutscenes, we all know that. Speaking of solely the gameplay though, MGS4 was still ahead by leaps and bounds. I rarely complain about technical issues a game has (Mass Effect 1 would be a 5 star game for me), but the framerate of GTAIV alone was almost enough to make me stop playing it. Fast cars and bikes were pointless because they were fast enough to turn the game into a powerpoint presentation, presnted by a person who doesn't know which button to hit to get to the next slide. The gameplay itself was just GTA, but again. The story was just GTA, but again.  I figured I was completely done with GTA games, but I've went back to VIce City after playing 4 and it's still amazing. "

You didn't even play the game and you shouldn't because you are 5 years below age restriction.   Framerate wasn't constant but it wasn't a problem with this game. This game works perfect regardless.  Framerate changes have different impact on gameplay in every game. GTA IV manage to be OK with it. "

Once you skip the main story and play Lost & Damned instead. Or better yet, skip GTA4 altogether and play Bully instead. 
That's still my fave Rockstar game, though Red Dead came close to inch it out

I liked it when I played Red Dead Redemption.

I prefer Chinatown Wars. 

While it was a solid and well rounded GTA experience,IV's mission structure was far too repetitive,with only a few stand out tasks (bank robbery,final mission).I really must incline you to get either of the episodes,though I'm weighing more in favour of BOGT because it stuck to the foundations that the series was created upon:mindless,wacky fun.I can still appreciate the gritty story and cast of characters,however.If you want to know more about why the series has a cult gathering,you should look no further than last generation's titles.

If you hate the driving controls that much then you should just stop now. I love GTAIV but that aspect does kind of suck. The character and story stuff does get pretty damn good though.

I guess everyone who didn't like this game posted in this thread.

I felt that if GTAIV was more like MGS (so very cutsceney), it would have been superb. The characters in that game were an overall great cast with plenty of humour and stuff. But there wasn't enough of them. The gameplay was good at the beginning-gunplay was managable, and the free-world aspect was as usual great. But there was too much of that.
 On the other hand though, I just felt that Saints' Row 2 was more of a GTA game than GTA ever was. And that's what I want from GTAV-mad stuff like flying planes and police cars, running away from 6 star police because you just got into there place with a shotgun and wasted every single one of them. Most of all, though, I want local co-op.

I could never get into the game. The whole social aspects and constant phone calls got on my nerves. It was just as annoying as real life friends. I just wasn't have fun.

The first time wasn't the problem, it was the hundredth(exaggerating) that killed it for me. At least side "stuff" in RDR was cool.

I thought the writing, characters and setting were fantastic in GTAIV, the cover-shooting was average, and the driving took some adjustment. It probably took me an hour to even get the hang of the new driving controls, so I'd say it's too early to to determine your opinion one way or the other. The story won't take off for a little while yet. The side-stuff, like taking people out to socialise, was pretty annoying too.
If you haven't played previous GTA games you might not care for how it plays, it's probably the weakest in the series mechanically.
