So the only Grand Theft Auto game I've really put any time into was GTA4. That means that I'm used to how GTA4 plays in terms of its gameplay. I recently bought GTA: San Andreas over Xbox Live because I want to experience that environment before I play GTA5. I like it so far but I'm running in to one problem that I hope people on here can help me with.

I'm specifically having problems with the shooting. Every time I play I try my best to hide behind cover but I'm having some issues. Is there anything resembling a cover system in here? How about body armor? Anything at all that would help me succeed? I'd even take simple strategies because I like the game but can't get around this shooting.

    Thanks.

It's kind of hard game at a times and Checkpoints are horrible, If you can I would advise to go with the PC version looks and plays way better plus is cheap as hell nowadays.

About the shooting be patient and use more skills there is no magic there.

There is body armor, but no cover system, although you can crouch and "take cover" behind objects. Also, there's a cover system mod for San Andreas, but i guess that wouldn't do you much good. Anyway, just go for the headshots and try to take em out from a distance, the AI is pretty inaccurate as it is.

You need to think of ways of breaking the mission your on. Like running dudes over, or jumping out of a car while crashing it into dudes. Killing guys from afar is helpful too. I can't really remember what they were but I think there were side missions that give you helpful stuff like more max health and armor.

There is no cover system. The combat in the old GTA games was not great, but it is not too bad so long as you remember to get full health and armor before missions. I would try to find the closest location where I could get armor, whether it was outside or in an ammunation, and I would just get that before every mission. If you do that the missions never become too tough.

Break into an airport and fly a plane to mount chiliad. Steal a bike and race it down a mountain. After you die go back to the airport you've already broken into steal another plane and go to Las Venturas. Of course you shouldn't land the plane you should jump out of it like a man.

Since you're literally the only person I've run into that has bought the game on Xbox Live, do the cheats still work as expected? I want to say the same, but since this is your first time playing it. Jetpack cheat saved me so much frustration in that game.

I have no idea if the cheats work or not. They should I imagine as I think this is just a direct port of the original Xbox game. I'll try some cheats and let everyone on here know.

There is no "cover system" per se but crouching behind walls can save your butt in a few situations. Always go in to missions with full health and body armor, and maybe a little luck

@SamFo: I think cheats are synonymous with the GTA games. I remember those old cheat books that were sold in the magazine sections would always have them. I didn't use them in GTA:IV because they discouraged it by locking achievements, but otherwise I don't think they hurt the play experience. I guess its just a matter of taste.

The shooting is way easier thou, San Andreas is from a time when developers didn't know how to make shooters on consoles.. specially 3rd person shooters.

@JasonR86: In case you don't know, there are lots of good weapons near your house in grove street. There is a pistol near the bridge in the neighbourhood, armour under a nearby bridge, an uzi under another bridge, another uzi on the roof of the house next door, spray paint on the roof of the store behind your house, a shovel in Ryder's back yard and brass knuckles under the bridge that goes over the street that leads to the grove.

@SamFo: After playing through Vice City with cheats first I also think they ruin the experience. You can still 100% with cheats. I don't use cheats anymore though unless they are fun ones and only once I've finished the game. The 100ft bunny hop cheat is super fun. Hopping from roof to roof throughout Los Santos is really cool. Trying to get up to taller and taller buildings is like a whole new experience that you don't find without cheats.

I did the same on the Xbox because putting the cheats was a pain , but completing the game without using them gives you a great sense of acomplishment even more knowing almost everyone use them , also I remember that game being easy as hell by the end you don´t really need any cheats the hardest mission in the game were the Zero ones and cheats are usless in those, and by the time you´re forced to regain the territories in the Gang wars I was already dual wielding the double barrel shotguns.

I remember that game being a breeze. Then again, I used the health/money/armor cheat more then a tween using Facebook. But it was seriously easy because the enemies never moved around when shooting at you. Get a sniper and snipe them from far or use a sub machine gun. I don't know why it's so hard for you. Shoting was easy.

This is what I'm feeling right now with Vice City. When this came out I loved it and don't really remember having a problem with it but maybe GTA4 has soured me. Having a hell of a time with the shooting and it's so tedious to go and make sure I have body armor and loaded weapons before every single mission.

I also have GTA: SA on XBL and there's no problem for me, you forget SA was made in 2004 for the PS2 and not 2007 like GTA IV where game play mechanics changed drastically

also near the end of the game and haven't even touched Zero's missions, I REFUSE to buy his property

@Anwar: I think many would agree with me if they had given the PC-version a shot. That being said, unplayable is maybe a tad hyperbolic. There's lots of stuff to do that doesn't involve shooting.

San Andreas shooting is pretty much crouching and spamming the aim button and rolling around, the AI is pretty terrible so the game isn't really all that hard imo.

You're going to LOVE Zero's missions. *evil grin*

    Fuck those missions, FUCK them!

I still don't think I ever finished them.

@Anwar: I reload every mission I bite. Train mission took me three tries, but Smoke's delivery of that line pretty much softened the blow. haha

The shooting is way easier in San Andreas than in GTA 4.  All you have to do is to lock on then hit R1 and L1 to switch between targets.  In San Andreas all you have to have is an m16 and you can just stand in the center of a tight alley, use the auto-lock on, and you are pretty much invincible.

I used cheats to make the game easy and after that the game was just a breeze.

    Amazing revelation you have here.

I never specifically wrote that but okay.

Even with cheats this game is pretty challenging.
