I'm just hoping they go back to having the fret board explode at the end of the song.

Activision has released the first batch of details on Neversoft's Guitar Hero 5. The info covers songs and a few new modes and options that'll be included in the upcoming release.

Here are the confirmed songs for the game:

    • Santana - No One To Depend On (Live)
    • Vampire Weekend - A-Punk
    • Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire
    • Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire
    • Stevie Wonder - Superstition
    • Tom Petty - Runnin Down a Dream
    • White Stripes - Blue Orchid
    • Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil
    • Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower

Iron Maiden will also be included, but the song(s) haven't been announced. Over 30 of the songs on the 85-song soundtrack will come from groups who haven't previously appeared in a rhythm game.

On the mode side, the game will feature a new RockFest mode where players compete against each other by building streaks to gain momentum. Players won't need to form a proper band anymore, allowing all four players to play whatever instrument they want. I would like to watch four drummers play simultaneously, because that sounds appropriately ridiculous. There will also be a Party Play option, where music just sort of plays, jukebox-style, and people can pick up instruments and join in whenever they please. This sounds roughly identical to a similar mode that was found in Microsoft's karaoke game, Lips.

The game will hit this fall on PS3, PS2, Wii, and 360.

Hopefully it has no fail in it this time and the interface doesn't suck.

Tracklist is looking quite good, here's hoping for some Blue Oyster Cult.

So, this year in stores we will be seeing:
    Rock Band 2
    Rock Band: The Beatles
    Lego Rock Band
    Guitar Hero: Metallica
    Guitar Hero: Van Halen
    Band Hero
    Guitar Hero World Tour
    Guitar Hero 5

There are going to be some confused-ass parents this Christmas. You'd think there were half a dozen companies releasing games, not TWO.

Also, hey, you think they'll patch GH:WT and GH:M to allow the songs to export so they can all be played on GH5? Haha just kidding.

Actually quite good! Drumming could be fun in A-punk or Blue Orchid. And singing on Kings of Leon.
    Excitement mustered, against the odds.

    Hell.  Yes.

I am a huge BSG nerd, and I'd buy a Guitar Hero just for that song.  Yes - I'd spend a goddamn fortune on plastic instruments just for one stinking song.  I am that big of a geek.

The only plus so far is the ability for multiple instruments of the same type.  Bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica have more than one guitar player and being able to play with up to four guitar parts would be a great feature.  Not being able to play rhythm on GH Metallica was my biggest problem with that game, especially given the fact that it was possible in previous GH outings.

So far I've yet to see GH match RB for content and style.  GH seems to feel the useless song studio and fret pad were enough to offer fans in lieu of weekly songs.  And making a band-focused game every 6 months now seems their plan, even though those games can't work with DLC from the main game without specific exceptions.  I liked the Metallica game, mainly because it offered some great songs and didn't require any new hardware.  But until thay do a KISS or Iron Maiden game, I don't see myself buying another GH.

This all actually sounds pretty cool, i played gh world tour and it kinda sucked compared to rb2, but mettalica looked like it could be better with the new modes and xpert + shit. I feel like mettalica was what world tour should have been u know? But if they include the additions to mettalica, and sort out the drum fills, with this new stuff it could be a great game.

Dude. I was feeling good about the soundtrack, then I saw Neversoft's fatal mistake. Dylan's All Along The Watchtower? Not Hendrix's cover? Dude. How could they do that to us? That's freaking insulting.

A-Punk is great, but no part of the song, with the exception of singing, seems like it would be particularly interesting in Guitar Hero.

They really need to chill the hell out with the Guitar Hero series. I stopped following it when they introduced all of the instruments because it was just too expensive. Now it seems like they're pumping out sequels left and right.

Cool, but really, they don't need to make yearly releases for these all the time. Just keep using DLC, and only bring out a new game if it adds something to the gameplay. Only thing I'll give them for is that they got the better controllers, other than that, I'll stick with Rock Band.

There stretching out this series way to far... Fuck sakes, they need to put this series to bed and work on a new IP, I am tired of the same game coming out every year (Call of duty however I'll let it do this, it is somewhat different every year), but Guitar Hero? Its the same thing, just some new modes and songs, which you could do on music packs on the PSN and Marketplace, Activision, please stop this madness.
