To add to the news of vaporware still being in production (referring to DNF), the long awaited mod for Half Life 2, Black Mesa (previously Black Mesa: Source) has been announced as nearly complete this week. For those who don't know, Black Mesa is a mod that was announced six years ago and is a complete remake of HL1 using the Source Engine. And I don't mean like the Valve-made Half Life Source Engine port. The mod aims to modernize completely the experience of HL1, completely for free. Though their website has not been updated in over 220 days, one of the texture creators for the project, "Orcone", is a member at Atomic Gamer, and Orcone brought them a nearly complete version of the game to play through. They ran an article on it on August 31, calling the experience jawdropping and the project an "outstanding effort."
This is wonderful news for me personally, I have been periodically checking out this project for years now, and to hear that it is almost complete is incredible. They are stating it might be out by the end of 2010.
Here's the trailer for those who don't know about this project:
Half-Life 2
Game » consists of 18 releases. Released Nov 16, 2004
Several years after the Black Mesa disaster, Gordon Freeman awakens from stasis to aid a resistance movement against the Combine, a collective of trans-dimensional aliens that have conquered Earth.
Black Mesa Half Life 2 mod not dead yet! (Complete remake of HL1)
Yes. At least to the free thing. I assume it would work with any source game, not just HL2.
" They should just stop delaying the inevitable and let Gearbox finish it now. "This should become standard procedure for all vaporware now.
" Great! much better news than Duke Nukem "This and I am so freaking pumped right now.
Like Duke Nukem Forever, I will only allow myself to be pumped for this after it is released and on my hard drive. It's been years of them saying "almost done" and "by the end of the year."
Funnily enough, there's and ongoing discussion in their forums of which game will be released first, although I give a small mod team a lot more credit for getting a game done without funding and without going out of business and having development finished by a team of professionals.
" You can see some of the production stuff things on their youtube page.Yeah, only problem with that is that delaying the game for "perfect cockroaches" isn't really the best reason.
http://www.youtube.com/user/BlackMesaSourceMedia I believe there was a big deal about getting the cockroaches just right. One of the developers likes cockroaches. "

" Funny. I remember them saying it was nearly complete... like a year ago. "True dat. Only difference is, this is the first time they've let someone play through a nearly complete version of the game, which certainly gives me hope.
Almost completely forgot about this. Still looks amazing.
Please let it come out before the year is done. Pretty please?
" @InfamousBIG said:Gearbox for Ep3 :o" @Dalai said:gearbox should forever be known as the finishers. or anti valve. "" They should just stop delaying the inevitable and let Gearbox finish it now. "This should become standard procedure for all vaporware now. "
" Does portal (which I got free) count as a game which I can play Black Mesa on? "Yes.
