Looks like a squad to me...
Joystiq noticed a little, almost throwaway line in a Seattle Times profile of Bungie that ran this morning. Most of the article talks about the particulars of Halo 3: ODST, but there's this little sliver of Halo: Reach sticking out:

Bungie also received an early look at the "Project Natal" motion-sensing controller Microsoft is developing for the Xbox. Studio President Harold Ryan said he's enthusiastic about the device and it could be used in "Reach," another version of "Halo" expected in the fall of 2010. "I absolutely think 'Reach' could be enabled with it," he said.

OK, motion-camera support in a Halo product. Does that make your skin crawl with disgust... or tingle with excitement about the future? Of course, considering we know next to nothing about Reach, it's probably hard to feel one way or the other.

But let's assume for the moment that Halo: Reach is, in fact, the rumored squad-based tactical combat game set in the Halo universe. This is somewhat supported by the teaser graphic, which pretty deliberately shows different-looking character silhouettes, like it's trying to be all class-based and stuff.

In recent tactical combat shooters like GRAW or Rainbow Six Vegas 2, you would order your AI teammates around, telling them to move to forward cover, telling them to open fire, when to hold back and stay quiet, and so on. If you've watched enough bad action movies, you know that there tend to be a set of incredibly exaggerated hand motions used by, say, Ben Stiller or whoever, to direct the dudes behind him.

So what if some form of those movements were used in a game like Halo: Reach to silently order your squad around? I'm reaching, I know, but I think that'd be kind of awesome. Provided it worked, of course. I bet this dude, at least, would be stoked.

Then people could never play the game with other people in the house. OR they would just unplug their mic.

Oh, hell no. I'm not really a fan of the series, but don't ruin the Halo series with this Natal crap. Yeah, Halo with Natal compatibility just makes me sick. I'd rather play Halo with a controller in my hand than look like a fucking idiot trying to imitate soldiers' hand signals.

Selling Natal and a Halo FPS together is one way to get the thing into homes.

Makes sense

I spose I could live with the natal stuff, but I dont see why bungie cant just make it without it.

I don't really understand why people are saying don't add natal crap to it? As long as it doesn't affect you if you just want to use a normal controller, I don't see how it could be ruining it? :S

I dont see why noone else thought of this with a title like "REACH", bring it on.
The only reason i can understand people not wanting Natal is Paralysis or Obesity.

lol ... imagine this ...
you will still have your controller, you want to give an order so raise your arm to motion the team to stop. Sounds cool no?
(because we all know voice in halo games gives away your location on the radar!)

That, or I don't want to wave my hands around in the air like an idiot to reload a gun when pressing a button is a well-esablished and time-proven method of doing so.

But whatever, this'll be something like the sixaxis control in Resistance, or there'll be two control methods.
Avatar image for teirdome

Voice recognition using Natal to boss your dudes around is about all I could see Bungie doing with it.  I don't expect them to put some gimmick six-axis-like stuff in the title just because they can.

However, I could see Dirty Dancing: Halo being a popular title with the ladies.

How the hell could this mean that you can no longer play with a controller??? Natal is just an addition that you can OPTIONALLY use.
Optional: left to one's choice; not required or mandatory. Do you seriously think they will take away your controllers?

Whatever, I trust Bungie to make good design decisions. Sounds like potentially a lot of fun. Why are so many people so negative about stuff like this? Be optimistic everyone, everything is better that way.

Jeez guys, as long as they incorporate it in an innovative way, I don't see what's wrong with it.
You will still have a controller in your hands, hopefully Natal will just be there so you can just raise your hand and you can send your squad somewhere.
You wont be standing in your living room holding an "air gun" moving around all immersed...

Also if halo reach is ever to launch with support for natal, it will function also without it.

So it's a win-win situation. Who ever wants to use it, uses, how don't, don't.

The only real issue would be that games instead of relying in the game pad would use only natal, but that is not happening any time soon, and it will only happen if the consumers do support it.

So there is nothing to fear... for now... muahahahaha

I think everyone just ignored what Jeff has said and went instantly to say "OMG TEABAGGING" as soon as they saw Halo+Natal.

My biggest problem with Rainbow Six Vegas and Ghost Recon is the lack of total control I have over my squad mates. That would be tricky to do on the console due to button limitations, but if I can do simple tactical gestures that also translate into real life, it can fix the problem I have with the game and also help others who want a military or police career train off time with these signals.

I really do not understand at all why people seem to be freaking out about this.  First off, basically nothing is known about Halo: Reach, so how can people seriously judge how Natal could affect it?  Second, he says it "could" be enabled with it; if it's not even a definite on being included then why are people bitching that they don't want to be flailing around with it.  If anything it looks like it would be minimal and optional.

Bungie are a good developer and wouldn't throw motion controls into a game for the sake of motion controls. I'm sure if Bungie do incorporate the natal into Halo: Reach then whatever the way they will do it I'm sure it will be in a genuinely enjoyable way.

@Jeff: I'm pretty excited about motion controls being in Halo: Reach as long as they feel natural. It really annoys me when I play a Wii game and the motion controls feel forced and like they are last minute changes.

Guys this would work if they had a gun controller.

Think about it, a halo game where you use a normal controller, but could fully move your body, hands and head.

Stop overreacting guys, Natal may (emphasis on MAY) be used with Halo: Reach, so what could it do? Maybe scan your face for a custom character in multiplayer, or armor ect. Maybe it is to order your squad mates around with hand signals. But Bungie is smart, they aren't going to 100% fully use Natal as the controler, the game simply wouldn't work. Relax guys. Oh yeah and its called Reach because it takes place on the planet Reach, the title has nothing to do with a Natal reference.

I'd be surprised if they left out head tracking. That seems like pretty basic stuff for a shooter. If they couldn't do both hand signals and head tracking (for whatever reason) I would rather have head tracking.

Also, you people that think the product might have less value because it would let you make use of an accessory in addition to the standard controls, you're complete fucking idiots. If you think these accessories are here to replace controllers, join the fucking GOP, you ignorant bastards. Nobody is trying to take away your guns -- er controllers. Somebody has to tell you.

Because of the party chat system, everybody can probably be as noisy as they want now. BUT, in Splinter Cell chaos theory, you actually had to watch the loudness of your speech when playing coop over xbox live. Every noise you made would be shown in the sound-meter-bar thing in the corner of your screen (just as the noises you made in-game), and nearby guards would obviously get weary.

The best part about using hand signals to control your squad in Halo:Reach?  You won't have to write them on your hopper like you do with verbal signals.

There was someone in the forums (can't remember who, but I'll bet it was SmugDarkLoser) who was saying that Natal wouldn't take off...and I said that if Halo: Reach or Gears 3 adopted it, then it would become the standard very quickly for developers.
