Are you sure? I just checked Bungie.net and the thermometer is still frozen at a near complete state. 
 
Edit: Just signed onto Reach itself, and you're right! Too little, too late though; most people have moved on to other games.

Nice.  They need to update the meter on b.net.  I checked that about 5 minutes ago and assumed it was still in place.
 
Pretty sure I'll still be Lt. Col Grade 3, but I should rank up in a few days.
 
Has there been any word on if they've simply moved the cap up or is the lid completely blown off?

I think it's completely blown off now and Bungie.net just hasn't updated itself yet.

So they gave up on "reaching" (oh yeah) the daily challenge goal or whatever? Part of me wants to give them props because that idea was absurd, but the other half feels sad that they didn't have enough people doing the challenges.

I was done with Halo Reach a couple of weeks ago.  This isn't enough to entice me back in unfortunately.
