A repetitive romp through a Halo side story
Halo: Spartan Strike is Microsoft's 2nd attempt at making a top down shooter based on the Halo universe. It is to bad they didn't learn anything from their last attempt. To start off the story is about a unnamed spartan that has been tasked with running a bunch of simulations to get ready for battle. Which is just a excuse to revisit old locations like New Mombasa and Gamma Halo. Each environment is recreated well and the visuals are fine for a game that was made for a tablet. Plus this game controls well even on a controller and I was able to accurately shoot my way through each stage. Every stage also has a side objective that could give the player a reason to replay them.
Yet those side objectives are hampered by a credit system that was also in the first game. Each player earns credits by competing stages which can then be used to buy temporary power ups. The temporary nature of them gave me no reason to use them since this game is also really easy. Along with that it doesn't have much variety enemy wise either. Every enemy also acts the same with their only ability being that they try to shoot the player.
The bite size nature of each level fits in with the fact that this was made for playing on the go. But that also means you can compete this game in less than 4 hours. Which would be fine if they gave the player a better reason to revisit stages. It is also easy to obtain a gold star on each stage and the fact that the bonus level set was just revamped levels gave me zero reason to come back for more.
In the end this game was a okay top down shooter. It just didn't impress me in any way. Going through each stage didn't leave me wanting for more or even giving me enough of a challenge that I wanted to keep playing to better my skills. If you really like Halo this game could be worth looking at other wise I don't think it is worth playing.
