    A hamburger is a hunk of ground beef served between two pieces of bun-configured bread. Hamburgers are often served with a variety of toppings and condiments. It is named for the region in which it was invented, not for the kind of meat (as is often mistakenly suggested).

    Is a sloppy joe similar enough to be considered a hamburger?

    This is a toughy, but I don't think it is.

    A hamburger is one patty, while a sloppy joe is ground beef that hasn't been formed into one object.

    Sloppy joes are very different from hamburgers. They don't taste that similar.

    Nope.  Sloppy Joes contain sauce and other non-hamburger ingredients.  A hamburger stays contained into one entity.  Sloppy joes are soupy enough to be eaten outside of a bun whereas it is just weird to eat a hamburger outside of its bunned environment.

    Not true at all.  A burger needs a patty of beef. 

    If I drop a patty off the grill and my friend steps on it with his golf kleets, I can't scrape it up and throw it into a bun and call it a burger.

    it all depends on your definition of a Hamburger.

    its ground beef like a hamburger but is not formed into a single pattie.

    maybe the real question should be is a sloppy joe a sandwich?
