    Hi folks,

So I've been thinking about getting into Heroes of the Storm with its 2.0 release but could do with some tips for newer players. Should note I have some experience with Dota 2 and had some great moments, but grew tired of the community and being bitched at for 'not playing perfectly' and while I'm sure the Heroes of the Storm community is probably just as bad, I do think its a slightly more approachable game. I have jumped in for a co-op match but haven't yet played a proper match of the game and would love to hear some tips that might not be obvious to new players.

Would love to to know if there is a good Giant Bomb community on Heroes of the Storm? I'm not sure if there are clubs, clans etc but would love to join the community. Excited to see the changes 2.0 are making (even if they're basically throwing the Overwatch progression/unlock system in there).

    Appreciate the help.

I will probably have a look at it - especially as you can get 20 heroes straight away Source

I don't think the game is very popular on this site, so from what I can tell there is no noteable community here. I play between 5 and 10 matches a day and consider myself an ok-ish to good player, so if you want/need tips feel free to add me on Battle.net (readme#1736) ... I usually play on the EU servers but recently started to play on US too. From what I can tell the US servers are less toxic than the EU ones but the game overall seems to be not as bad as other games in the genre (it hat it's fair share of assholes though).

Let's see, key things that I learned from my time in HoS...

    1) Experience is at a team level, but that doesn't mean you don't need to lane. It may seem intuitive that because you don't need to seek out xp for yourself, it no longer matters that your group soak up as much individual XP as possible - if you can get kills by ganging up, that's just as good as killing creeps. But if you fail to get the ganks and you leave a lane unattended, that's a lot of xp your team isn't getting. One of the most common "noob" mistakes in HoS is when a couple of heroes are standing around waiting for a chance to safely attack a tower that the enemy is hiding behind when they could be "soaking" xp elsewhere.

    2) Beware the level 10 and 20 advantage. All levels matter, but level 10 and 20 are when heroes get their ultimate abilities. Entering a teamfight where one team has ultimates, or level 2 ultimates, and the other does not puts the latter at a huge disadvantage

    3) Watch out for specialist classes split-pushing. Characters like Sylvanas, Murky, and Gazlowe can and will tear apart undefended towers on their own. Don't let them have their way.

Other than that, standard moba stuff applies: Look at builds online, learn how to play characters for each role, learn how to select talents that can adapt to your enemy's composition. And don't ignore the objectives!

Thanks for the tips and thoughts. Will take them onboard when I start playing proper.

Noticed there's a new Nexus Challenge on the way, shame I don't know anyone who plays Heroes, most still play Dota 2.

    This is all really good

    I'll add

Don't die: this is pretty much the number 1 rule of any MOBA but it's especially important in HotS, when you die you give the other team experience and it's time that you aren't able to contribute experience to your team.

Beware the level advantage, if the opposing team has 1-2 level advantage, kills/team fights will be very hard and at 3+ level advantage it's practically impossible to kill the opposing players.

Never give up, the level advantage really falls off past level 20; a game you've spent getting your ass beat can very easily turn into a win with one good team fight at the end; winning a team fight past level 20 is an almost guaranteed win.

I'm not the OP, but the tips so far have been helpful, thanks guys!

I used to play Dota 2 (and loved it) but had to stop when I no longer had time for 1-hour matches. The match pace in HOTS seems fantastic so far; it seems like there's just a few minutes of laning at the beginning and then you get right to capturing objectives and doing teamfights.

Thank you for this, this post got me to play the game again after a very long hiatus. Pricey heroes were my only complaint about this game, the opportunity to acquire almost every Warrior for free solves that.

I've been playing Heroes since Beta. I'm not even that good but I aint no scrub. I've only played a little DOTA 2 but I played a decent amount of League. I'll try to just give you info that makes shows why Heroes is different.

    1. Objectives are very important! Each map has a different objective, you can see what they are in the loading screen. When objectives happened, it is almost always a good idea to group up for a team fight. Unless you have a guy (who is not just a jerk) split pushing, you should group up here. Otherwise make sure there is at least one person in each lane for xp.

    2. Comebacks happen ALL THE TIME. I know IGN's 6.5/10 says that comebacks are harder in this game than others, but I CANNOT DISAGREE WITH THE REVIEWER ANYMORE ON THIS SUBJECT. This is the EASIEST game to comeback in. One team fight can easily change a game and it happens probably 30% of the time. So don't give up ever. There's a reason you can't surrender in the game. Seriously, you must TRUST IN THE LIGHT!

    3. Level differences are minuscule most of the time, but at level 10 and 20 be careful. This rule applies to all heroes besides Chromie who levels 1 faster than everyone else. If the enemy team is level 10 and you are 9, just soak xp until you are 10. Do not fight. 20 is less of a difference but still big.

Other than those three, the way to get better is always know your character and know everyone elses. This game has some of the weirdest heroes in it like a guy who is actually controlled by two players and a character who only affects fights across the map. And as always, fuck Nova.

I tend to hate MOBAs but I'm having such a good time here! Team fights always, no last hitting etc. It feels very fun. Aiomon#1448!
