Hohokum was developed by Honeyslug, and released on August 12th for the PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. This game renewed my interest in PSN, and I booted up my PS3 just to check it out. Hohokum easily caught my eye. The game is bright and colorful, which is a rarity. The music in the game is very cheery, and I looked forward to spending long hours playing this game. Without further ado, here’s my review of Hohokum.

As I mentioned before, Hohokum easily caught my eye. The game has wide color palette, with so many colors represented. As you maneuver the “Long Mover”, as your character is called, it changes color based on the direction it’s facing, sometimes wearing the full rainbow. The settings of the game are diverse, but are all full of color. Some stages use many shades of the same color, while others use a certain part of the color spectrum.

The soundtrack of Hohokum is enchanting. Each world has its own background music, and the whole soundtrack covers different genres. Some stages have a synth and involve techno-type music, while other stages have flutes and bongos as you wander through the woods. Every song is upbeat, and puts you in a good mood.

The settings of Hohokum involve a lot of interactive elements. They usually make sounds when interacted with, which adds to the music. The puzzles of the game are solved using the world’s interactive elements, and those interactive elements can have many different uses and applications. Most levels usually require you to escort at least one NPC that helps you on your way.

A defining part of Hohokum is its story. The narrative is non-linear, and all of the game worlds are unlocked from the start. The game’s main premise is this; you must travel through the game’s many worlds to complete puzzles that will free other Long Movers from the world they were trapped in. They will then be present in the game’s hub world. You can save any worm at any time, and as mentioned before, the interactive elements in the game world have many uses, so the puzzles in each world have varied difficulty.

Play Hohokum. There’s no reason not to. It’s a bright, playful, enjoyable world with wonderful characters, intriguing settings, and beautiful environments.
