In HomeTown Story, the player is tasked with taking over the now rundown shop of the main character's deceased grandmother. In its starting state, the shop is unappealing and no customers have a desire to shop there. It's up to the player to restore the shop, invite new customers, and befriend the townsfolk to turn their inheritance into a healthy business.
One of the main goals of the game is to grow the shop. Gathering goods to sell in the shop involves venturing out of town into the surrounding area and collecting them by hand, purchasing them from traders, or acquiring them from other villagers.
Interacting with the townsfolk is another key component as everyone of the has a unique history and their own little quirks to figure out. Talking to them and getting to know them is the key to a successful life as a shop owner. There are a total of one hundred NPCs that the player can interact with over the course of the game.
