...after five years of using a Sony Ericsson K750i I've opted to jump on the smart-phone-band-wagon (umpteen years late I know) and got myself one of those iPhone 4S thingamajigs today. I managed to get a pretty good contract with O2 as well with unlimited texts, unlimited minutes and 1GB of data usage a month all for the affordable price of £36.00 a month, minus the one off fee of £50 to 'purchase' the phone.

Old faithful, we've had a lot of memories together him and I...
Old faithful, we've had a lot of memories together him and I...

My real question however is related to the Apps Store and more specifically to get some recommendations from you guys and girls as to what the 'must have' apps are for iPhone users and naturally, with this being a video game site and all, to get some gaming related app suggestions as well.

So Giant Bomb community, help a brother out here and enlighten me as to what apps I should be looking into!

Good on you! I recommend: Twitter, Facebook, Shazam, Autostitch(personal favorite photo app), Evernote and Wordfeud. There are a billion more apps, so just check out the categories for what you'd like to have an app about, and check out some reviews. Happy hunting!

Uh well for starters, you seem to have chosen a £36 a month contract with £50 upfront. It's generally a good idea to pay more upfront and pay less per month cause it works out cheaper. Anyways, there are a tonne of decent games on iOS. Tales of Monkey Island, NBA Jam, Bejeweled, Game Dev Story, Peggle, Plants vs Zombies, Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick, GTA 3.

@Hamz: Nice. Here are some of my favorites.

Whiskey Media Video Buddy is a good app for watching videos for all of the whiskey sites except Tested since they use youtube for their videos now.

Camera+ is a great app that adds a timer and independent focus and exposure settings for the iPhone camera.

You can have some good laughs with VidRythem by Harmonix.

Jetpack Joyride is probably my favorite time waster on the iPhone.

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP is probably the best game on the app store if you're looking for a more in-depth experience.

USA Today is the news app I use.

The free Twitter app is also good.

Radio Alarm Clock is a alarm clock and a radio that I use every day to wake me up.

Chu Chu Rocket works surprisingly well on the phone

Game Dev story is also great.

You might also want to browse through some of the app of the day videos on Tested to get some recommendations.

Games: Jetpack Joyride and Words With Friends. Infinity Blade 1 & 2 and #sworcery are good too, but those first two games (particularly WWF) are the only ones I play on any kind of regular basis. And avoid Sonic CD. It's a good game, but the controls are crap.

Apps: Facebook, Pandora, Wikipedia, IMDb, InstantWatcher, The Weather Channel, The Free Dictionary and Joystiq are the only ones I use with any kind of consistency. The free Flashlight apps are pretty useful as well.

Also, aside from the basics, my iPhone is a podcast/audiobook machine. If you haven't checked out WTF with Marc Maron or Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, you should do so posthaste.

The two apps I use the most are Tweetbot and Instagram. The new Instapaper has beautiful typeface for reading. Pretty useful to sync articles to read offline.

The only game I seem to play is Tiny Tower, although I do have Jetpack Joyride, and Final Fantasy Tactics installed.

I had that Sony phone for years, too. Best phone I've ever owned, everything about it was great. Except the joystick, that sucked.

As far as apps go, bejeweled blitz is a great version of the game. And if you like broken sword, they made a competent portable version.

I used a K750i for about 2 years and it is still my favorite phone I have ever had. At the time that phone was released a 2MP camera with autofocus on a phone was fucking mind blowing.

Congratulations! I find the only people that the product are those that don't have one. The others just don't like it - you know, like a normal human being.

Anyhow, I would recommend the following apps:

    - iA Write:. Simple & elegant writing app. Good for note taking or jotting down ideas.
    - Downcast: Downrigh the best Podcast app on the iPhone. I've used at least 10+ and none meet this app in quality.
    - TeleNav: Great GpS app, 'nuff said.
    - AV Playe:- Simply send your videos from your computer over an FTP client and watch all file types on your phone. It's fantastic (and quick) for when you need a new episode transferred for a boring day.
    - Orchestra:Free task app that does what paid apps do, but better.
    - Reeder: Great RSS app for blog reading.
    - Epic Win: Another To-Do/Task app. Love it because You turn everyday tasks into XP to level your character. Even gives you comical loot.
    - Kindle: Self explanatory me-thinks.
    - Zombies, Run: Probably heard This one on the podcast. It's a great app to get you in shape, however I don't recommend turning on the Zombie mode unless your in better shape than the average American.

    Now onto games.

    - Shadowgun: A gears of war type clone, very fun and the controls are actually different.
    - Sky Gamblers: I was surprised at the quality if this title. It's a jet fighter/dog-fighter that is a lot of fun to play. multi-player is a blast, too.
    - Infinity Blade 1&2: fantastic brawler type games made for he iPhones interface. Must buy.
    - Shadow Era: if your into great card games, don't pass this one up. Free to get into, and I still haven't purchased anything with real cash.

That's just a sliver of the apps and games I have on my phone. I have been an avid iPhone user since the 3G launch and my phone has nearly 4 pages of apps/games that I use regularly.

    Again, enjoy your iPhone!

Drop7 was my most played game of 2010 and 2011 and I'm pretty sure it's free now (Play hardcore mode, in my opinion it's much better than the regular one).
Jetpack Joyride, Bejeweled, Canabalt, Ghost Trick and Spider: The Secret of Bryne's Manor (Or something like that, don't remember the exact title) are also very good.
Flipboard, Instapaper and Photo+ are must haves.

Sol Free Solitaire - Who doesn't love a good game of Solitaire?

Alien Blue - If you're into Reddit, that is. It's the best Reddit client around; the free version also doesn't have ads.

Ultimate Rage - Like rage faces? Want to send them to friends? This app has hundreds of them. It isn't free (it's cheap, though), but the faces are all high-quality and the creator updates with new faces pretty often.
