iRacing is a super-realistic sim racer. Giant Bomb is a website about video games that doesn't take itself too seriously. Naturally, they're a perfect fit for each other. That's why we have a league over 65 members strong ready to race anything whenever it's convenient.

If you like the idea of iRacing and can afford it, you should join us.

    To Join:

    1. Have a giantbomb.com account.Post in this thread to let me know you're interested. You don't need to divulge any info here other than your interest, it's just to confirm you have an account for the next steps.
    2. Fill out our extended application on Google Forms right here. It's quite a few questions, and you don't have to answer them all, but a standardized response sheet beats "I'm basically available anytime" when trying to judge what time's best for setting up races. No offense intended towards any of you that said that.
    3. Apply to the league on iRacing.com. I'll see you applied, find your response in the extended application, and let you in. Easy!

NOTE: If you send an application on iRacing.com and don't post in here or fill out the extended app, your application will likely be ignored, and I'll ask you to complete the whole sign-up process via a PM on iRacing. Once you've completed the process, I'll let you into the league.

    Rules:

    • Don't be a jerk. Just like on Giant Bomb. Try to race clean in any races that aren't intentionally set up to be full-contact, and be nice to one another.
    • Don't be an elitist jerk, seriously. Everybody has to start somewhere to get into racing. Don't be an ass or look down on someone just because they're making rookie mistakes. Being helpful's a lot more...helpful, and we're not exactly a sim racing community. It's better to be all-inclusive to all cool duders.
    • Follow iRacing's rules. This isn't so much my thing, but I don't want anyone banned because someone started cursing too often over voice chat and found themselves muted somehow. Don't do anything that would get you suspended or banned.

Aside from that, I'm excited to welcome all interested Giant Bomb users to the league, and welcome any suggestions. Here's the league!

(Thanks to B0nd07 for our awesome logo!)

    Done!

And btw, I wasn't so sure about the "How long do you want the races to be?" question. I'd prefer 30 minutes just because it might be pretty late in the day for my timezone, but I'd actually be okay with up to an hour too if that should be the preferred answer. So I answered 30min, but an hour would be okay as well.

Well since I've been putting off signing up for iRacing for months now, I'll go ahead and buy a subscription. Then fill out all the paperwork. This looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.

OK, new rule coming up here for getting in, and I'll edit this into the original post. This is as a result of the application area being buggy and causing me to accept applications for the wrong users, letting in people who I'm not sure are actually Giant Bomb users.

    • If you apply to the league and I don't see a filled-out extended application or post in this thread, your application will be ignored. Once this information appears, I'll either accept the previously ignored app or send out an invite.

I know this might be annoying, especially to the lurkers, but I want to make sure the Giant Bomb Racing League is full of people who use and enjoy this website/community and its style, not people who just think the name is cool or applied to every league they could find.

@pseg: a good rule. Although with how convoluted iRacing's league page is, I don't think too many people will stumble on it by accident lol.

Seems I just lost the post I submitted.

Anyway, count me in. Have been simracing for 8ish years or so. Haven't raced much iRacing though. I usually lap within about 2-3% of WR times depending on the track, so not super quick, but quick enough. I don't get mad at slower racers ;) (because I'm not a crazy person)

Would love some crazy racing shenanigans with the GB folk.

Would this be something you guys would consider streaming? I don't have any intention of playing this game but it's really fun to watch and I'd love to tune in.

@dennisthemennis: I can stream from my POV if it doesn't lag too badly for me. I haven't looked into any spectator controls yet but I could definitely stream that if I'm not racing.

I just got the racing rig set back up and signed up on the form and the group. I voted Sun, Mon & Tues since I've usually gotten racing done for the week and it's just practice time for the next week on those days for me.

Our league numbers are way higher than I expected at this point! Let's begin testing race sessions, shall we?

The Race to Raise Rabies Awareness

The rabies virus may already be inside you. Let's race until it's gone!

Saturday, August 10th from 9-11 PM EDT

    • 40 minutes practice
    • 20 minutes qualifying
    • 22 lap race (60 minute time limit)

    Car: Mazda MX-5s, stock setup

    Track: Laguna Seca

We'll see how this works out and adjust accordingly. Do note that no actual seasons will begin until PAX Prime is over, so it'll probably be this and one more test session until then.

Also, if anybody wants to host a race (or has a great idea for a race/series), let me know. I can help you admin it up or whatever you need done to get the event rolling!

Had a terrible race experience on an oval track. I'm pretty sure I didn't hit anyone but definately got hit and over braked a couple of times. I lost .05 on my safety rating and I feel like ass shit now. I think iRacing might be too stressful for me.

@datarez: I'm not seeing a way to put the race on the calendar, unfortunately -- I wonder if that functionality is limited to seasons only (if that's the case, I'm just going to throw all future races into a season).

Kind of thought that would be an automatic by iRacing to put any league-specific hosted events on the calendar. Real shame, that.

Also, there is a really handy tool here that you can use to automatically convert the time to other peoples' timezones. Like so.

I think only losing 0.05 SR counts as a a good rookie oval race! Especially this week when its the really small oval. I got stressed at first too though, but you soon get used to it :)

Yeah if we have a number of Europeans it may be best to do them during the day US time. Usually noon or 1 are the hot times US eastern for maximum participation on the weekend.

    I'll also recommend http://everytimezone.com/

Just to help with time choosing, this time is actually ideal for us Aus/NZ folk. It's right around noon/early afternoon.

Thanks. That actually makes me feel better. There were some real aggressive drivers on that course that I had enough trouble just staying on the track and letting them pass (so that they wouldn't slam into me). I did over brake coming in and out turns twice that caused me to spin out but nobody ran into me. The worst part was somebody in the chat saying, "Yeah #15 ran into me to" When I clearly never ran into anybody but was only ever ran into from behind.
