http://www.polygon.com/2013/2/7/3965608/daylight-is-unreal-engine-4s-first-frightening-game

In Daylight, players will take on the role of a woman who wakes up in the middle of the night to find herself in the heart of an abandoned insane asylum with no memory of how she got there. The asylum writhes with the terrible past experiences that took place there over the centuries and the spirits of those mistreated within its walls.

i never would have expected this,

and it sounds legitimately interesting, procedurally generated horror game where there are no weapons, no ways to fight back, only way to survive is to run. worked well for amnesia.

apparently she is part of a team of 6 at a studio called zombie studios, and that the story was inspired by a mashup of of Chobot's youth spent "urban spelunking and a healthy dose of urban legend, conspiracy theory and ghost stories"

color me interested

It could be good. Interesting if sort of rehashed premise. From listening to a few podcasts at IGN she had mentioned that she tries to write now and again and had written a few stories. I don't think they had ever been published though. I'm interested whether her name being associated with the game will hurt or help the game. She seems like a nice person but she has a reputation, unfairly placed if you ask me but people are free to think what they will, that might hurt the game depending on who is meant to purchase it.

Very cool. I approve!

A expect a lot of folk to be turned off by the fact that the game is written by a journalist who has been used as a sex model by IGN, but she's a journalist nonetheless and I myself interested in this game despite all things.

(was she PSP licker or epic... epic for the win or both)

For sure the PSP licker. It was either her or Olivia Munn that did the 'epic' thing.

A sex model? She was a host dude. That's like saying attractive female hosts of TV shows are sex models.

I'm digging the premise. At least it ain't another Slender clone that seems to overrun Steam Greenlight.

The main character will also be voiced by Chobot? I'm out then. She might be a brilliant writer for all I know but a good voiceactress she is not.

Theres another game exploring the same concept, that so far looks better produced, but what do I care. It's my kind of genre and I'll follow it to release

or maybe they'll just make her go through a similar environment and actually scare her IRL, totally works!

like that sunn o)))) song where they put a claustrophobic guy in a casket and made him do vocals

It's not impossible but I don't think it's likely either. I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

The amnesia trope is a writing crutch, and it's so overused that if it were a dead horse it'd be beaten into glue by now.

The idea of having a randomly generated area to wander through is interesting, but the premise is so boring that I just can't get interested in it.

@ShadowConqueror: Absolutely. People need to give her a chance at least. Also that she wrote the story the game is based on doesn't make her directly responsible for crap gameplay does it?

But what about when it turns out YOU WERE ALWAYS IN THE ASYLUM!!! or YOU DIED IN THE ASYLUM AND DON'T KNOW YOU'RE A GHOST!!! or YOU HAVE DORMANT MAGICAL POWERS!!!!!! etc.

I'll give it a chance, but yeah, amnesia is hard to get right.

sounds like it could be interesting, I hope they realise their goals with the project and that people's prejudices don't damage what seems to clearly be a heartfelt love of involvement in the videogame industry on Jessica Chobot's part.

Also prepare for thousands of let's plays of this by over reacting youtubers. It was called here, you all saw it.

I just think it will have the same legacy. One of the first announced next gen games, gets delayed, changes focus, comes out and is merely average/disappointing.

@Mirado: Amnesia has been used to excellent effect many times in games. It's commonly used because it suits games very well. it allows for a character study in which the player becomes acquainted with the protagonist's past and personality at the same time the protagonist is learning about his/her own self. The use of the amnesia trope is not by itself a mark of hack writing; only poor use of it is.

Just heard about it - wasn't aware of the Chobot connection. Love her or hate her, I wish her well and success in this endeavor - maybe she's the next *insert famous writer here*, only for video games.

I really what to know what "urban spelunking" is.

Also, this premise seems epic. Epic For The Win.

Yeesh, I'm really sorry about that, everybody. Whoo boy, that was bad. Honestly, it does seem like a pretty intriguing premise, and the procedurally generated nature of the design seems promising. Personally, I don't have a problem with Jessica Chobot. If she wants to branch out into creative development in the games industry, then more power to her. She seems to have her heart in the right place, so hopefully, this game turns out to be a cool experience both for the development team and the people who will end up playing it.

@chrissedoff: It's been done poorly more often than it has been successful, but that isn't the point; it's the overuse that I'm complaining about. I'm not talking about bad writing, I'm talking about lazy writing; amnesia has been done to death and at this point I'll take a mediocre original idea over a successful example of an amnesia trope.

@mrfluke: @TwoArmed: eh, it's been years now and one dumb saying and one slightly wet PSP shouldn't impact how people feel about the game (it will, but it shouldn't).

So it's Disney's haunted mansion, but in an asylum instead? Or maybe even Clock Tower esque?

Premise seems pretty much like a bare-bones horror book, curious to see how it plays out.

You wake up in an insane asylum with no idea how you got there.

So, you're an insane person who has been put in an asylum. And all the monsters you see are just orderlies and doctors keeping you from escaping. And you kill them all and escape.

Right? How could it possibly be anything else?

I'll give this a shot like I'd give any other game a shot regardless of how many PSP's were licked. I think that still being held against her is sorta dumb but whatever. I will say though unless she's improved considerably she might be better off getting good voice actors to make the game as good as it can be. She was sorta just ok in ME3.

Avatar image for ducksworth

Premise isn't anything that gets me excited but some aspects mentioned about the game are definitely interesting. I don't particularly care if Chobot is involved but I think mentioning how heavily involved she is could end up being more of a detriment, there will be negative reaction. Even as someone who's going to try and look at the game with an nonjudgmental approach I'm sure I won't be able to shake the fact that this is being worked on by someone who's known as idiot first, videogame host/journalist second.
