I mean, this seems insane from our perspective

But how many people were genuinely concerned as to whether House of Cards would continue after Spacey's "dirty laundry" became public?

Different cultures have different views on what is truly taboo and horrible. This seems like a MASSIVE overreaction, but I could easily see Rockstar pulling a game and redoing all promotional material if one of the main characters actor was revealed to be a diddler. I would hope that said pulling would be focused on editing it and possibly replacing the character and their performance, but i could also see the argument of it being safer to drop a year or two of development (so not Rockstar) than to become a brand associated with a diddler. Well, unless you are THQ Nordic. Then you go all in and make them the star.

So I will currently say "What the flying shit?" but hold "real" judgement until we see how this plays out

Japan culturally is inverted in that they have diddlers get caught and the public doesn't react the same or care as much but drugs they are utterly Draconian and Fascist imo much like the rest of Asia. Their constitution was formed in I think 1947 and had morals from America at the time.

Never mind the fact that Japanese working men get trashed drinking after a toxic 16 hour day at the office and that isn't seen as problematic (eyeroll...)

    Can we stop saying “diddler”?

Also, the House of Cards comparison doesn’t make as much sense. That was weird because Spacey was the star, and there was another season to film, and they had to rework the show to completely remove the show’s star. With Judgment, the game is already finished and doesn’t need the actor anymore, so the better Spacey comparison is more like All the Money in the World. I wonder if they’ll redub the voice lines for that character in Judgment.

Hopefully this doesn't affect the Western release at all. I could take a delay, but I wouldn't be surprised if they actually cancel it.

This is a great example of the strange and downright idiotic moral dynamics of Japanese culture. And comparing this to Kevin Spacey is completely ridiculous. In a normal society, there should be a world of difference between doing cocaine and fucking kids.

Not saying I agree with them (in fact, I think I made it abundantly clear I disagree with them). But if we can put aside the "your morals are wrong, ours are right" for a moment, it IS the same situation

Again, I would hope that the goal is to make the edits and get it back out ASAP and I could understand someone freaking out and saying "Just fucking pull it while we fix this" rather than get on the PR blitz. But, assuming this DOES get edited and re-released, it is "understandable" given the moral and legal system involved.

There are limits to cultural relativism (and child porn is probably that limit), but it's pretty tedious when Americans or westerners in general expect the world to conform to their definition of "normal".

It's very easy to mock but don't stand on too tall of a pedestal. Don't forget stupid shit like 'hot coffee'.

Seems like an overreaction to me but if it doesn't affect the western release then tbh my shit giving is severely limited.

@efesell: Hell, wasn't there a small kerfluffle over Oblivion and modders removing the bra and revealing that the male torso skin was stretched over it (thus giving the boobs really distorted nipples)?

Believe me, my criticism of Japanese culture is not an endorsement of American culture. Just as much, if not more, wrong over here too but I'm not going to apologize for calling Japan's regressive attitude towards drugs and their completely archaic drug laws exactly what they are. Just like I'm sure Japanese people look at gun culture in America and rightfully think we're a bunch of psychos too.

Well, some people like to do what famous people do. So, whatever these famous people do end up being a promotion of sorts once it goes out to public. Going from this point of view i could understand why they went this. SEGA is losing money because of this but i think that they rather lose temporary money than loyal fans.

I always feel it hard to "Judge" Japanese Culture ( or any other culture) sure it's weird for a Westerner / Enlightenment culture groups, But eating frog legs or molded cheese is weird for people in the Japanese Sphere.

Also Judge Eyes is a way better name then Judgement.

I would totally understand if the game was in development still, but retroactively going back to "fix" something like this always kind of bothered me. I understand the different cultural norms surrounding drug use in Japan vs. the US, though don't necessarily agree with them, but I much prefer something more akin to how they treat old episodes of Looney Tunes, the whole "hey this was made in a different time with far different values, presented as is, please understand, okay?".

Though then again it's not like we don't have our own similar situations, like the Simpsons producers making the episode "Stark Raving Dad" being unavailable to watch/own because it features Micheal Jackson(who was uncredited in the episode, and didn't actually sign any of the songs in the episode, and come on allegations against Jackson didn't just come out of nowhere).

    @panfoot: I think its a hard problem

With loony toons: To my knowledge, they aren't making ridiculously racist and transphobic cartoons anymore and most of the ones they still show are decades old.

Contrast that with something like that Louis CK movie from a year or two back about a hollywood exec wanting to have sex with an underage girl in exchange for a film role and Louis CK's character masturbating into a plant. Still amazed that didn't get pulled and buried in the same tire fire as The Day The Clown Cried (five more years!).

Which gets to why this is a hard problem: Some people have no problem separating art from the artist. Some people do. I personally know that I can't watch Woody Allen or Roman Polanski stuff but generally have no issue with a Tom Cruise flick (as long as he isn't TOO smarmy and manipulative). I didn't watch Arrested Development's latest season because of Tambour (but I suspect also because 4 was so bad).

Again, I don't understand Japan. But I am going to give Sega the benefit of the doubt and assume they do. And they felt this was enough of a controversy that they would pull and (hopefully) edit the game.
