One Word Review: Justice League Heroes
Review: Forceful
I rushed through this game like a bullet train in Japan. It wasn’t too short. My play through was roughly around 8 hours or so. The other reviewers that I read had the game around the same play time. The game just held me pretty well for the time that it spent in my hands. I played the game on the PSP, which may have helped with its accessibility; I was able to take the game on the bus, to the coffee shop, or even to the bathroom. So, I had a lot of off time when I wasn’t doing something else where I turned on the game for a few minutes, or a few hours. And, I did. I just kept coming back until the credits ran.
Like Star Wars: Force Unleashed, this game uses its powers very effectively. At the beginning of the game, my energy depleted quickly but towards the end of the game I was able to spam these super powers effectively. I felt this was a good implementation; a little bit of power at the beginning, but it also gave me something to build up while I was playing the game. The characters and super powers are varied and useful in different circumstances. I found myself switching characters a lot, but there were a few levels where I ended up abusing Superman’s Heat Vision. Sometimes I switched because I was forced to by the game, but I also switched between my two party members quite often just because I wanted to get a feel for each character.
The voice acting was delivered well, the game tended to focus on Batman; voiced by Ron Perlman. The other voice actors were well played as well. Zatanna stands out in my mind as a character whose voice work was well done.
The cut scenes were one of the most powerful things about the game. From the start of the game, I was bombarded with high quality cut scenes. There was some bad dubbing in parts, but this was forgivable when compared with the overall production and movement of the characters and environments. I was very happy they included a Cinematics option on the title screen.
The Justice League shields provided a nice collectible. Because one cannot unlock every character and skin in one play through, if a player wants all of the goodies they must give the game at least a second play through. I’m not that much of a comic book person, but just having different super moves from different characters is reason enough for me to play through at least one more time.
Overall the game kept me on track, which can be hard to do sometimes, but because of the punchy, yet varied game play and the interesting well done cut scenes, it wasn’t very difficult for me to breeze through this game. This game was like eating a sandwich in the afternoon, between lunch and dinner. It was really good and it tided me over until the next thing. I’m not hungry anymore.
