I know it's still a part of the games industry, and as an 'event' it's kind of important. But after watching some of the quick looks I kept thinking 'why am I watching these guys do tai chi/wave at balls/play with tamagotchi-cats?'.
Surely there's a cut off point for what constitutes a video game, and what is just a toy?
Kinect Sports
Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Nov 04, 2010
A sports title using Microsoft's Kinect, players can participate in six different games including beach volleyball, boxing, bowling, soccer, table tennis, and assorted track and field events.
Should games journalists even bother covering Kinect?
It's meant to be the thing that gets more people to play games, Wii and Move are the same. They are simplified video games.
absolutely.
they should instead focus on writing even more articles on the current flavor of the month shooter.
I don't understand why they wouldn't, you raised the question but didn't really give a reason. Even if it were incredibly simple or aimed at children, we would still need to know if it was any good.
Ok, I underestimated all of your interest in kinect. To me it makes about as much sense as reviewing the latest $5 lcd games. Plus i thought it was a damn shame to see talented writers and knowledgable game reviewers critique the biggest loser on how well it responds to thigh movements. I'd rather see them cover more indie games or jrpgs, but I guess I'm out of the loop.
As much whining and moaning as has been coming from some over Kinect a lot of "core gamers" are actually interested in the product. People not only know if the Kinect will provide anything that they will enjoy but also want to see what videos games will be like for casual gamers. Oh and as far as the "games are toys" point goes I couldn't agree with that sentiment much less.

Dude, it's a video game accessory. Yes, absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt video game journalists should cover it. You're crazy for thinking otherwise.
People want to know what's up with Kinect. Press's job is to inform us on this stuff.
So, instead of judging and giving impressions on things that re actually new to the industry, you rather they continue reviewing stale, first person shooter #234?
I hope, for the love of god, no one listens to you.

I don't understand the snarky attitude towards the Kinect. The whole snobbish idea that a different sort of player interface or input device suddenly makes it below what a "real gamer" would pay any attention to. Its that same ignorant attitude that the media marks all video games as children's fair and anything with an adult theme or content is an outrage and its destroying our youth.
Everyone else has already said anything else I could have added to the discussion. I just don't understand the elitism.
