Overview
The Kingdome was a domed multi-purpose sports arena that first opened in 1976. It served as home field to several professional Seattle sports teams, including the
Mariners of
Major League Baseball, the
Seahawks of the
NFL, and the Sounders of the North American Soccer League.
The stadium was demolished by implosion on March 26, 2000 after the city of Seattle and King County followed through on plans to replace the aging facility with a pair of new stadiums.
Qwest Field, home of the Seahawks and the
Sounders of MLS was constructed on the former site of the Kingdome itself, while the baseball stadium
Safeco Field was constructed nearby. The decision to replace the Kingdome came about following an incident in which pieces of the concrete ceiling broke loose and fell to the surface below.
