Kissing in a Kirby game? Count me in!

Ok, well, not really, but now that I have your attention, Kirby Super Star Ultra is a great addition to the Kirby franchise and to the library of anyone who likes a good platformer/action game.

Kirby Super Star Ultra is actually an omnibus of different smaller games. You've got games like Spring Breeze which are typical Kirby fare of travelling through different levels, copying abilities from enemies, and defeating bosses. On the other hand, you also have games with unique objectves, like beating Dedede in a foot race or moving through Meta Knight's ship Halberd under time conditions. All in all, there are 10 of these small games and 3 mini-games.

The new prominent gameplay feature in this Kirby is the ability to have an ally with you. How this works is that after you suck up an enemy and copy their ability, you can summon an ally that will take that ability from you and follow you around and help defeat enemies. This leaves you open to copy a second ability to use for yourself (my favorite combo? A fighter kirby with a beam ally). Overall this is a pretty neat feature, because it really allows you to see more of the abilities in action. There's even some unique things that happen with certain combos. For example if you and your ally have the wheel ability, you can combine and become Kirby on this pretty powerful moped-type thing. The execution of this is pretty well done, although some ally-types help a little better than others. Some will jump right in to help you fight while others may require you to take extra effort to get him close enough to an enemy to trigger a reaction. Sometimes they also get stuck with path-finding. Many times I'll be running along and notice my ally stuck against a ledge. This isn't too much of a hassle, because if you go far enough they will teleport to you. And if you're going through a floating area where you have to avoid the ceiling and floor or else you take damage? Well, you can pretty much say goodbye to about half of your ally's health. It's pretty easy to regain health though, as plenty of HP-giving fruit are strewn across the stages. Kirby and his ally both have their own health bars, so when kirby picks up a fruit he can let his ally benefit from it as well by running up to him. They then do a face-to-face animation which suspiciously looks a lot like kissing. Of course, you can always get a second player to join in with his DS and take control of your ally character. However if only one of you have the game you can only play Spring Breeze.

The difficulty of the game scales fairly well. You'll breeze through the first few games, and then the difficulty begins to ramp up.There were a few times where I'dl finish a stage with just a sliver of health left after the boss battles. Because of the limited screen size and sometimes seemingly random attack patters, sometimes it's hard to read the boss' next move and move out of the way in time to avoid damage.

Graphically the game is vibrant and fulfilling. The backgrounds and spriting are colorful and smooth, and they really increase the enjoyment level of the game. I found the small touches in the movement animations to just really impress me,  and they don't detract from the solid controls at all. The game also includes 3D cinematics which are decent fare, and while the games each have a story you probably won't pay too much attention to them.

Kirby Super Star Ultra is such a feel-good game. It's not frustratingly difficult (probably due to a more kid-based demographic) and some of the small touches actually made me smile (the stage start screen for a stage in Dedede's Revenge showed Kirby fishing when a little octopus thing jumps up ito his face). I never found myself flustered by lackluster controls, and the bosses, while somewhat repetitive because you fight the same bosses multiple times, are cleverly drawn and put up interesting fights (there's a boss that simulates a pokemon/rpg battle: you'll know what I mean when you get there). Definitely give this game a try even if you're new to the Kirby franchise, because it's a solid platformer/action with a great feel.

Kirby Super Star Ultra is an upgrade of a Super Nintendo game with improved graphics and more content. The original was already loaded with stuff to do, so the kart is fairly packed to the brim with activities. It's really a collection of games, including a few touchscreen-based competitive modes but mostly focused on an interesting mix of takes on the normal Kirby gameplay. Kirby runs, jumps, floats around, and can absorb 19 different powers from various enemies that occupy the levels. T...

Kirby comes out of the closet! 0

Kirby Super Star Ultra : An “expanded” edition of the Super Nintendo pseudo-compilation, Kirby Super Star.Story : Actually, Kirby Super Star is a series of smaller adventures, each one based on either saving the world or saving food. I’m not going to criticize a story aimed at kids of being uninspired so it is what it is. This Nintendo DS version adds computer-generated cutscenes in spots to tell the stories, and while I like this addition for “Revenge of Meta-Knight” as a means of documenting i...
