Since L.A. Noire was released earlier this week on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Rockstar Games has been filtering through reports of freezing, crashes and stories about overheating consoles. For a while, the company was theorizing the most recent PS3 firmware was to blame. That quickly changed yesterday.

There was no real theory floating for the issues plauging Xbox 360 owners, but Rockstar issued a statement today addressing it, pointing the finger at media folk like myself for inspiring mass hysteria.

"With the launch of L.A. Noire a very small number of Xbox 360 console owners have reported issues with the game freezing or locking up while playing," said the company in a statement. "We posted some troubleshooting tips on our support site for these very few people, a common practice for any game publisher. Unfortunately this was erroneously picked up by some news outlets as a 'story,' reporting that L.A. Noire was causing issues to Xbox 360 consoles - which is categorically untrue."

I don't remember accusing the game--or Microsoft's hardware--of anything devious, only reporting what Rockstar itself was saying on its own support website. Regardless, people are running into problems, which should hopefully be addressed in a patch coming to both platforms sometime in the near future.

"As soon as we have more official information about the first patch and the timing for its deployment, we will post the information here," said a company spokesperson on Rockstar's support website.

My PS3 fatty sounds as if it is about to start hovering all over my living room each time I play it. It has frozen once. I keep playing the game, but in the back of my mind I am always a bit scared.

it just pushes the console to its limit. maybe some of the older models are not good at dealing with the heat generated when the console gets pushed to its full capacity

I'm playing the PS3 version, about 3 hours in, and I haven't experienced any of these problems. I think some people simply have been unlucky whether they are playing the PS3 or Xbox version.

Hmm. Other than an extremely choppy framerate at times, I've had no issue with my 360 version.

I'm roughly 8 hours in and the only problem that I had so far was a section where the audio for a character didn't kick in when I asked him a question.  I quit out and reloaded and the audio worked fin.

Whats going on? Does each copy of L.A.Noire have some type of program that is overheating consoles?

They can deny it all they want, but it doesn't change the fact that my 360 becomes too hot to touch after around 4/5 hours of LA Noire.

Around that time it shuts itself down and displays 2 red lights (NOT RRoD). Once its had time to cool down, turning it back on displays a dashboard message letting you know the 360 got too hot and shut itself down (with additional info on how to prevent it from happening again. None of which applied to me).

Launch 360 Pro with latest firmware which has never had a problem with overheating in the past.

I agree with them...  You could take any troubleshooting forum post and create a mass panic when you have thousands of people who are going to see that story.

I guarantee you could drum up a panic if some big tech sites ran a story that Windows causes people to lose data, which sure, it occasionally does.

The only problems I've experienced with LA Noire on the 360 are:

+ It says it's saving the game . . . . and then just hangs forever. If you restart the console, it prompts you for the next CD.

+ The framerate is complete shit. Sometimes, it might get as high as 15fps! Oooh! The almost constantly pathetic framerate would make me take an entire point off the 5-point score for this otherwise great game.

I've got a 250GB Xbox slim and experienced stuttering/garbage video here and there when I first starting playing L.A. Noire. I shut it off and used compressed air to clean dust out. Haven't had any problems since (knock wood)

I have an old core Xbox and it's running perfectly on that. There's the occasional FPS drop but I can live with that.

It seems very weird that the oldest possible model of the 360 wouldn't have any problems such as locking up or overheating, and some of the newer ones that are meant to have improved cooling, would.

So that's why my PS3 occasionally goes into fan over drive once in a while in game. No lockups, but definitely the loudest I've ever heard my PS3.

@mrv321: These consoles are fine at lasting long marathon sessions. I've played MGS4 for like 15 hours straight and didn't have any such issue. Same with a couple 360 games.

I have to say, it's a bit odd that they say "we didn't do it! It's not the game! But.... here is a patch for the game >.>  <.<  >.>"
    @Branthog
Everyone I know playing on the 360 version says that the framerate issues are VERY rare. If you are having it enough to be that big of a deal (ie, as much as it happened in Reach's campaign) there may be something going on at your end. It's hard to know because the game is new so there isn't much in the way of precedent, but you might consider that.

I'm 5 hours in playing on the 360 Slim w/o any issues. The graphics and physics on this game are so detailed that I can see why some consoles from both the PS3 & 360, are freezing.

heh I would probably be afraid of this game overheating my X-Box if I didn't have it installed. It's so clearly taxing the system to its max, like San Andreas on PS2.

It seems pretty unlikely that a piece of commercial software would produce hitherto unseen hardware issues on two completely different consoles.

I had some SERIOUS issues with RDR, which made it unplayable for like 2 weeks. And i was not the only one (i have a PS3).

Looks like Rockstar cannot have a launch without problems. If it always happens to them, it cannot be someone else's fault.

I've clocked 20+ hours so far on the 360, and aside from the occasional framerate drop and some crazy texture pop after playing for 4-6 hour stretches, it has ran fine.  For as demanding as this game is on this old ass hardware, I'd say it runs really good.

It's no doubt that L.A Noire is a demanding game, so they shouldn't deny this. I had 1 freeze in the game and that was after 8 or so hours of gameplay in one sitting, with the game installed and using the 360 slim.

This is a extremely condescending article.

Rockstar did not call out any individual video game news outlets, but it said the media overall.

If you cared to look at any other video game news sites besides Giantbomb yesterday, there were numerous articles stating the Xbox 360 version of L.A. Noire was overheating consoles.
