Me and my friend are able to complete the campaign up until the actual finale. We've only managed to finish off the second tank once and we were forced to terminate the finale prematurely because one of us was killed by the tank. If anyone could offer advice on camping spots etc. it would be most helpful!

Well, if you have no shame, and you really want to beat it, just do what everyone else does and stack everyone inside the corner to the right of the gun case.  
 
Keep shooting & using melee and nothing can touch you really. A boomer may come in the front door and just pop around the corner, but it shouldn't be a huge problem. Plus if your good enough you can hear him coming in the front and shoot him through the wall. 
 
Then when the tank comes just have everyone grab auto-shotties and run him around the house. Thrown rocks are your main worry really, maybe someone else can help with that. 
 
Edit: I forgot the bathroom upstairs is pretty solid as well, only one entrance.
