LEGO Rock Band

Lego Rock Band for the Nintendo DS. This is most definitely a game that I did not think was one I really would have enjoyed. I played the first two Guitar Hero games for the DS with that guitar attachment that came with it. I did not really like those games because the attachment was just not made for those of us out there with large hands, and mine felt like they were going to cramp up. Luckily Lego Rock Band for the DS forgoes that attachment and is controlled by using only the actual buttons on the DS. As some people may or may not know Harmonix started their music games with Frequency and Amplitude on the PS2. Lego Rock Band brings it's gameplay style back to the basics in those games, which I loved. Instead of playing as one single instrument and playing in one lane, there is a lane for each instrument and you play as them all. The game also supports up to 4 player multiplayer, but I did not get a chance to try it out. As a player who plays Guitar Hero and Rock Band on expert this game did seem a bit easy. However I think that the difficulty is actually just right based on the fact that the DS is a much smaller system to play on.

The Lego style has been done now in many games, but I honestly do not understand why it was applied to Rock Band, as the core game play really didn't change a whole lot because of the Lego branding. In these types of games I really don't give much thought to the visual style as I am usually trying to pay attention to the notes coming down the screen instead of the people on stage.If you have seen one Lego game you can pretty much count on the same style in this game.

The song selection is pretty lacking here, there are not very many songs and some are an odd choice. There is only about 25 songs in this game, which for a music game is really not very much, however considering this game is on the DS I can understand. The sound quality is pretty good for the DS, but I had a really hard time hearing the songs if there was anything else going on around me. Repetition will definitely happen in this game as there is a limited number of songs with quite a few set lists, but playing it a little at a time here and there I didn't notice it as much as I had in other versions of Rock Band.

Overall I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed playing this game. I had gone into it not expecting a whole lot. I didn't enjoy the song selection too much, but having Ghostbusters and We Will Rock You on there made up for it. I think Rock Band Unplugged is a better game that is almost the same game play. That being said if you really enjoy music games, especially Frequency and Amplitude this one is worth a play.
